Major League Soccer has suspended New York Red Bulls midfielder Dru Yearwood an additional three games.

The disciplinary action comes after Yearwood kicked a ball into the stands during the RBNY vs. Philadelphia Union match on September 3 at Red Bull Arena.

His shot hit an individual in the stands, prompting Yearwood to make his way to the fan before being turned away by a family member.

The midfielder then took to social media to apologize further for his actions.

“I want to apologize from the bottom of my heart to the fans who were hit by the ball I kicked at Saturday’s match. My emotions got the best of me on this day, and I’ve let down the entire organization and every single New York Red Bulls fan. I hope the fans are OK and they can forgive me.”

The supplementary decision comes on top of the automatic one-game, red-card suspension Yearwood received during the match. In total, Yearwood will serve for four matches and be issued an undisclosed fine.

“I fully accept the suspension from MLS and I can ensure it won’t happen again. I want to sincerely apologize again. Please know that I will continue to work hard to be ready to give my all for this football club when I am again able to contribute on the field. Dru”

Yearwood will be ineligible for New York’s next four games, which carries through the end of the 2022 MLS regular season:

  • September 10 vs. New England Revolution
  • September 17 at New York City FC
  • October 1 at Columbus Crew
  • October 9 vs. Charlotte FC

The Red Bulls currently sit in third on the Eastern Conference table with 47 points in 30 games. They stand on track to make their 13th consecutive MLS Cup Playoffs appearance.
