The biggest fixture in the German footballing calendar takes place this weekend, as Borussia Dortmund play host to reigning domestic and European champions Bayern Munich in Der Klassiker.

The pair are level on points in the Bundesliga, and come into the fixture off the back of comfortable wins in the Champions League midweek, against Club Brugge and Salzburg respectively.

For Dortmund, beating their fierce rivals is a huge opportunity to make a statement in this year's title race, but Hansi Flick's Bayern look absolutely unbeatable at the moment - particularly in Europe, where they have now won an astonishing 14 Champions League games in a row.

Here's 90min's preview of the game.

Team News

Borussia Dortmund were able to rest players during their midweek clash against Club Brugge as they romped to a 3-0 win in the Champions League. Defenders Marcel Schmelzer and Dan-Axel Zagadou are ruled out through injury, while Mats Hummels is expected to undergo a late test to take on his former club.

Jadon Sancho is likely to return to the starting line-up after being rested in midweek, while young midfielder Jude Bellingham is also pushing for a start.

Bayern, on the other hand, destroyed Salzburg 6-2 win with a near full-strength side and will look to continue that momentum against their biggest title rivals. Winger Leroy Sane is likely to come back into the starting line-up after coming off the bench to score a peach, with Kingsley Coman likely to drop out.

Niklas Sule and Alphonso Davies are definitely out of the game injured, but Leon Goretzka should be fit to return to the side - he could replace the in-form Corentin Tolisso in the heart of midfield.

Predicted Lineups

Borussia Dortmund: Burki; Can, Hummels, Akanji; Meunier, Bellingham, Witsel, Guerreiro; Sancho, Haaland, Reus

Bayern Munich: Neuer; Pavard, Boateng, Alaba, Hernandez; Kimmich, Goretzka; Gnabry, Muller, Sane; Lewandowski

Recent Form

Both sides come into the game in great form and will be confident of rocking the apple cart of the other's title tilt. Dortmund have won four successive games, and six of their last seven; with the defeat to Lazio in the Champions League their only blip in that time.

In Erling Haaland, they have one of the most precocious young forwards ever seen at the highest level, and his supreme confidence in front of goal should keep Bayern's defence very much on their toes.

Bayern have bounced back from their unexpected 4-1 hammering at Hoffenheim with eight successive wins, scoring three or more goals in six of those encounters. Defensively they've looked not completely themselves though, and have kept just four clean sheets all season - well below their usual standards.

But they do have their own lethal marksman in front of goal, in the form of goal machine - and likely 2020 Ballon d'Or winner, if the contest were to be held - Robert Lewandowski.

Here's how both have fared in their five most recent games.

Borussia Dortmund

Club Brugge 0-3 B. Dortmund (4/11)
Arminia Bielefield 0-2 B. Dortmund (31/10)
B. Dortmund 2-0 Zenit (28/10)
B. Dortmund 3-0 Schalke (24/10)
Lazio 3-1 B. Dortmund (20/10)

Bayern Munich

Salzburg 2-6 Bayern Munich (03/11)
FC Koln 1-2 Bayern Munich (31/10)
Lokomotiv Moscow 1-2 Bayern Munich (27/10)
Bayern Munich 5-0 Eintracht Frankfurt (24/10)
Bayern Munich 4-0 Atletico Madrid (21/10)

Prediction

This should be an absolute cracker. Defensively, Dortmund have been solid with four clean sheets in a row and have one of the most lethal front lines; led by Haaland, but ably supported by Jadon Sancho and Marco Reus.

But Bayern Munich are a different kettle of fish. They are so dominant and ruthless in front of goal that you expect them to win every single game they play. With the depth they have too, they have quality to change the game from the bench should things not be going to plan.

Both teams will be confident of a win but ultimately Bayern will show their strength once again. Lewandowski's record against his former side is fantastic and the likelihood is he'll add to it during an entertaining away win.

Prediction: Borussia Dortmund 1-3 Bayern Munich
