Don Garber hints at possible changes to MLS All-Star Game in 2023

MLS commissioner Don Garber has hinted at a possible format change for the league's All-Star Game in 2023.
For the second year running, MLS faced off against the best from Liga MX, running out 2-1 winners at Minnesota United's Allianz Field stadium on Wednesday thanks to goals from Carlos Vela and Raul Ruidiaz.
Once again, it was a sellout crowd to watch the two best leagues in Concacaf go head-to-head. However, with all the other partnerships between MLS and Liga MX right now, Garber doesn't believe it's necessary for the leagues to meet every year in the All-Star game. Change could be on the horizon for the 2023 edition, hosted in Washington D.C.
“I’m not sure we need that for our All-Star Game,” Garber told ESPN’s Taylor Twellman on Wednesday. “You have Campeones Cup coming up in September in New York City so we'll see what next year in Washington D.C. looks like when D.C. United hosts."
Garber pointed to the expanded 2023 Leagues Cup as a possible reason to move away from facing Liga MX in the All-Star Game, with the two leagues taking a break from their domestic campaigns next year to undertake a World Cup-style tournament.
“We have done a really focused, strategic partnership with Liga MX, trying to build Concacaf into being one of the dominant confederations in the world, not just in our region,” Garber said. “The Leagues Cup Showcase the other night was amazing – 70,000 people at SoFi Stadium. So you’re going to see the [expanded] launch of that in ‘23, it’s going to be transcending what anybody ever expected.”
