Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone has confirmed that Kieran Trippier is on the verge of leaving the club.
Newcastle United have struck a deal to make the right-back the first signing of the Saudi PIF era, with the Magpies ready to pay up to £15m with add-ons to bring Trippier to St James' Park.
A medical is on the cards and Simeone has paid his respects to Trippier ahead of his imminent exit.
"I always try to look at the positives, and we're thankful for everything he has done here with us," Simeone said (via Marca). "The club have given him 48 hours to resolve his situation.
"We're grateful for him, he worked very hard. He has been a very important footballer for us. Now, we must look ahead and find solutions for what is to come."
Simeone also confirmed that Atletico are keen to find a replacement for Trippier, but he is prepared to keep going forward with his current squad if needed.
"The club clearly knows what we need and want," he said. "We are always in common agreement for everything that happens from here on. "We will do what we can, and if it cannot be solved, we will continue with the squad we have right now."
Newcastle boss Eddie Howe is eyeing a handful of additions at St James' Park this month.
On top of a new right-back, 90min understands that Howe hopes to sign a central defender, two midfielders and at least one forward, and those in charge are happy to take advantage of any other opportunities in the market if they arise.
