German giants Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich square off again on Tuesday to decide the fate of the German Super Cup.

The two sides have met in the Super Cup in seven of the past nine seasons, with Dortmund winning three and Bayern taking four, including last season's 3-2 thriller.

Bayern are usually the favourites but enter the game in patchy form, with new boss Julian Nagelsmann yet to taste victory even in pre-season. By contrast, Dortmund just put five past Frankfurt and look like they're firing on all cylinders already.

Dortmund team news

Marco Rose has more than a few problems to contend with. Thomas Meunier and Julian Brandt are both out with COVID-19 and knee problems have sidelined Mats Hummels, Marcel Schmelzer, Mateu Morey and Dan-Axel Zagadou.

Raphael Guerreiro is back in training after shaking off a calf injury but is unlikely to be fit enough to feature, but there is hope that midfielder Emre Can will be back after missing the season opener against Frankfurt. Goalkeeper Roman Burki is free to leave the club and is unlikely to travel with the squad.

Bayern Munich team news

Right-back Benjamin Pavard picked up an ankle injury before the season started and could well miss the next month of action if reports are to be believed.

He joins Marc Roca and Lucas Hernandez on the sidelines, but one player who could return is midfielder Corentin Tolisso, who missed the Gladbach game but is now back in full training.

In Super Cup terms, this fixture is a regular occurrence. Of the nine matches since 2012, seven of them have involved these two sides.

Bayern won it in 2020 with a thrilling 3-2 victory, snatching the trophy back from Dortmund after they had won it in 2019 - a win which ended a run of three straight victories in this fixture for Bayern.

In the wider scene, Bayern have also had the bragging rights in meetings between these two. They've won five on the bounce, completing league doubles over Dortmund in the past two seasons.

Common sense dictates that Bayern come into this game as favourites, but at this current moment in time, something about Nagelmann's side doesn't look right.

While they weren't at full strength, Bayern failed to win any of their four pre-season games, but they had most of their starters back when they were held by Gladbach at the weekend.

Dortmund, on the other hand, are flying. After a mixed pre-season, they were terrifying against Frankfurt, with Erling Haaland looking particularly keen to cause chaos. Spirits are higher on that side of Der Klassiker.

You can never rule out Bayern, but it's Dortmund who will come into this one feeling happier.

Prediction: Dortmund 2-1 Bayern
