D.C. United acquired defender Hayden Sargis from USL Championship side Sacramento Republic FC, the club announced Monday.
The player joins on a three-year deal through the 2024 Major League Soccer season with club options for 2025 and 2026.
“Hayden is a young center back who has all the qualities to be an outstanding piece of our backline in Hernán’s system,” general manager Lucy Rushton said in a release.
“He played a lot of minutes for Sacramento Republic, and we believe he is ready to make the jump up to MLS and compete for minutes on the first team. We’re excited to welcome him to the club and we’re looking forward to getting him integrated with the rest of the squad in preseason.”
Sargis signed his first professional contract with Sacramento Republic FC in January 2020. He made his debut in a 1-1 draw with FC Tulsa on March 7 before going on to make 35 appearances in two years.
The defender recorded one assist during his time and was nominated for the 2020 USL Young Player of the Year.
Prior to playing with the first team, Sargis formed part of the Sacramento Republic Academy. He first joined the program during their inaugural season in 2015, and spent five years there before working himself up to a professional contract.
D.C. United is set to kick off their 2022 MLS campaign on February 26 when hosting expansion team Charlotte FC at Audi Field.
