D.C. United have re-acquired midfielder Chris Durkin from Belgian top-flight side Sint-Truidense V.V. via a trade with the Houston Dynamo.
Durkin has returned to D.C. United - where he began his professional career in 2016 - via the MLS Allocation Order. The Dynamo used their No.2 spot in the order to acquire his rights, which they traded to DCU for $325k in General Allocation Money - $200k in 2022 and another $125k in 2023.
The 22-year-old joins as a U-22 Initiative player on a three-year contract with a club option for a fourth.
“We are thrilled to welcome Chris back to the District after he started his professional career with us back in 2016,” D.C. United president of soccer operations Dave Kasper said in a club press release.
“He has picked up valuable experience in Belgium's top division where he has matured and improved as a player. We believe that Chris will be a great addition to our roster and his skillset will adapt well into Hernán’s system of play. He has a great range of passing, covers a ton of ground, and has physicality on both sides of the ball. Chris rejoining the club will strengthen our roster as we push to qualify for the MLS Cup playoffs in 2022.”
Durkin joined STVV in August 2019, initially on loan before making the transfer permanent less than a year later. The midfielder made 70 appearances in Belgium across all competitions scoring twice and providing five assists.
At international level, he's capped extensively for the United States across various youth levels.
“Chris rose through D.C. United Academy ranks to become a breakout Homegrown player for us in 2018," general manager Lucy Rushton said.
"His vision, athleticism, and passing ability will be a huge asset for us on the field and will complement the players we currently have in the midfield. Chris has also shown his versatility throughout his career which will give Hernán flexibility to adapt our formation and shape during the season.
"He understands the club and is returning home after an impressive three seasons in one of the top European leagues. This is a great moment for him and the club and we’re looking forward to welcoming him back to the District.”
