Manchester United legend David Beckham has said that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has done an ‘incredible job’ at Old Trafford, praising the impact his former teammate has had on the club despite renewed criticism of the Norwegian’s time as manager.

United finished sixth in Solskjaer’s first half season in charge in 2018/19, improving to third in 2019/20 and a return to the Champions League after a late flurry of wins during ‘Project Restart’. This season, the club has been in the top two since December and was even briefly first in January.

Solskjaer recently pointed to the league improvement over the last two years as the most important sign of progress being made, even though it has come without any trophies being won. His comments were misinterpreted by some as a ‘trophies don’t matter’ statement, which made for even more criticism when United were then knocked out of the FA Cup by Leicester on Sunday.

However, Beckham, who played alongside Solskjaer for seven seasons between 1996 and 2003, including the 1998/99 treble campaign, thinks his former colleague has done well in tough circumstances.

“I've seen some of the criticism but I suppose when you are a manager of Man United when they've had success over the years that they've had, there was always going to be a point where people get criticised, whether it's the players, whether it's the owners, whether it's the manager," he told ESPN.

“Ole's been in the game long enough to be able to take any kind of criticism. He's very quiet, he gets on with his job, and I think he's done an incredible job down at United.

"The results are starting to show that. Hopefully it continues because the fans love Ole, we all love Ole and we all want him to do well. So when the criticism comes, he's one person that can take it."
