Former Barcelona and Brazil defender Dani Alves has been jailed without bail after being arrested in Catalunya on suspicion of sexual assault.

The 39-year-old was taken into police custody on Friday morning after allegedly touching a woman under her clothes without consent.

The incident happened at a Barcelona nightclub on 30 December, with police subsequently taking a statement from the woman after she informed staff members and she filed an official complaint four days later.

Earlier this month, Alves denied he had acted inappropriately in an interview with Spanish television channel Antena 3, saying: "I was dancing and having a good time without invading anyone's space.

"I don't know who this lady is... How could I do that to a woman? No."

Alves attended a court hearing later on Friday after being transported from a police station in Barcelona, where the decision was made to remand him in custody while investigations continue.

Alves is Brazil's second most capped player with 126 international appearances to his name, and enjoyed a highly successful eight-year spell at Barcelona between 2008 and 2016. He has also played for Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain in recent years, and most recently joined Mexican outfit Punas UNAM in July.
