A Luka Modric masterclass ensured that Scotland would exit Euro 2020 in the group stages, with the midfielder scoring one and setting up another in a 3-1 win for Croatia at Hampden Park

Croatia took the lead on the quarter of an hour mark thanks to Nikola Vlasic. The CSKA Moscow man volleyed the ball past David Marshall following a wonderful knock-down header from Ivan Perisic at the back post.

Scotland pressed forward in search of an equaliser after going behind, with John McGinn spurning two decent chances in the space of 90 seconds - the first being a header across goal, the second being a rather tame first-time strike from around the penalty spot.

They deservedly bagged an equaliser just before half-time, via a fantastic strike from the edge of the box from Callum McGregor.

After the two side traded chance - which were missed by Croatia's Josko Gvardiol and Scotland's McGinn - Croatia retook the lead through Modric. The best midfielder of the last decade (no arguments, this is a fact of life) curled the ball into the top corner of Marshall's net with the outside of his foot on the hour mark to make it 2-1.

Croatia then added a third in the 77th minute via an Ivan Perisic header from a Modric corner.

The result means that Croatia qualify for the round of 16 having finished second in the group, while Scotland bow out in last place.

Right, let's get into some player ratings.

Scotland player ratings

1. Goalkeeper and Defenders

David Marshall (GK) - 5/10 - Did well to deny Gvardiol at the start of the second half. No goalkeeper in the world would've gotten close to saving any of Croatia's goals.

Scott McTominay (CB) - 5/10 - Could've helped O'Donnell out a bit more than he did because, well, it was pretty clear that Perisic had the beating of O'Donnell all night.

Grant Hanley (CB) - 5/10 - Subbed off with an injury in the first half.

Kieran Tierney (CB) - 5/10 - Struggled to deal with Vlasic's movement at times.

2. Wing-Backs and Midfielders

John McGinn, Dominik Livakovic

Stephen O'Donnell (RWB) - 4/10 - Out-jumped by Perisic in the lead up to the opening goal, and generally not quite at the races in the same way he was against England.

Stuart Armstrong (CM) - 4/10 - Honestly felt a bit sorry for him having to go up against Modric.

John McGinn (CM) - 5/10 - Spurned two relatively decent chances in the first half, and then spurned a glorious one in the second half.

Callum McGregor (CM) - 7/10 - Scored Scotland's first tournament goal since 1998, and it was a pretty damn great goal if you ask us.

Andy Robertson (LWB) - 6/10 - A typical Andy Robertson performance. You know what that is, you've seen him play a million times.

3. Forwards

Che Adams (ST) - 5/10 - He's brilliant at holding up the ball and finding pockets of space in front of the defences to exploit, but just lacks any real goalscoring instincts.

Lyndon Dykes (ST) - 5/10 - Probably too similar to Adams to play with him. Worked hard though to be fair to him.

4. Substitutes

Scott McKenna - 5/10 - Battled well when introduced. Missed a great chance in added time.

5. Goalkeeper and Defenders

Dejan Lovren

Dominik Livakovic (GK) - 6/10 - Could do nothing about McGregor's goal, but was fantastic when coming off his line to deal with crosses into the box.

Josip Juranovic (RB) - 6/10 - Brought in for Sime Vrsaljko, and made his mark immediately with a pre-assist (look at that football nerd word) for the opener.

Dejan Lovren (CB) - 6/10 - Had a Lovren performance. Good in the air...not so good at anywhere else...but that didn't matter because Scotland's strikers just didn't bother running in behind all night.

Domagoj Vida (CB) - 5/10 - Awful clearance in the lead up to the goal. And awful barnet too. We're not sure which is worse to be honest.

Josko Gvardiol (LB) - 6/10 - Got forward well, particularly at the start of the second half when he burst into the box and missed a chance to give his side the lead for a second time. Looks a real player.

6. Midfielders

Luka Modric

Mateo Kovavic (CM) - 6/10 - Looked pretty unstoppable when he burst between the lines with the ball. Didn't do it as often as you would've liked.

Luka Modric (CM) - 9/10 - This man. What else is there to say about him? Scotland's midfield couldn't get near him all night, he scored arguably the best goal of the tournament so far (Patrik Schick disagrees, obviously) on the hour mark, and then he set up the third with a delightful corner kick. Too. Good.

Marcelo Brozovic (CM) - 7/10 - Proper good footballer. Fought well against an energetic Scotland midfield.

7. Forwards

Ivan Perisic

Ivan Perisic (RW) - 8/10 - Always seems to turn it on when playing for his country, doesn't he? Perisic set up the opening goal with a knock-down header into the path of Vlasic, and bagged the third with a near post header.

Bruno Petkovic (ST) - 5/10 - Didn't look capable of controlling a football until the second half, when he finally did and set up Modric for his goal. Was hooked off soon after - the great touch seemed like a fluke to be honest.

Nikola Vlasic (LW) - 7/10 - Bagged his sixth Croatia goal on the 15th minute mark with a well-taken half volley. After that, caused Scotland's backline a whole host of problems.

8. Substitutes

Andrej Kramaric - N/A

Borna Barisic - N/A

Luka Ivanusec - N/A
