Cristiano Ronaldo has described losing his baby son during child birth as the ‘worst moment of his life.’

Ronaldo and partner Georgina Rodriguez announced in April that they had lost their baby son, although his twin sister had survived and was bringing them “hope and happiness.”

The Manchester United star has opened up about the loss for the first time in an interview with TalkTV, and he says it is something he will never understand.

"It was probably the worst moment that I have passed through in my life, since my father died," he said.

"When you have a kid you expect that everything will be normal and [then] you have that problem. We have difficult moments because we don't understand why it happened to us.

"It was difficult, to be honest, very very difficult to understand what's going on in that period of our life.

"As you know, the football carries on. There are many competitions, the football doesn’t stop. So many competitions. Passing through that moment was the most difficult I've ever had in my life. For me and my family, especially Geo, it was tough.

Ronaldo had the added challenge of attempting to balance his emotions between sadness for the loss of his son and joy and the birth of his daughter.

"I try to explain sometimes to my family and even my close friends: I had never felt happy and sad in the same moment,” he said.

"It's hard to explain. You don't know if you cry or if you smile, because it’s something that you don't know how to react to - you don't know what to do.”

In other parts of the interview, Ronaldo directed criticism at the Glazer family’s ownership of Man Utd, as well as former teammate Gary Neville.
