Coventry City will take on Luton Town for a place in the Premier League after beating Middlesbrough in their play-off semi-final.

The Sky Blues prevailed 1-0 at the Riverside Stadium on Wednesday night having held Boro to a 0-0 draw at home in the first leg, and they will face Sunderland's conquerors in the Hatters at Wembley on May 27.

Michael Carrick's men had a chance to go ahead only four minutes into the second leg when a cross from Ryan Giles appeared to panic Coventry, but they eventually managed to clear their lines and regain composure.

Giles then put in a great defensive shift to take the ball off the toes of Jamie Allen when he was bearing down on goal towards the end of a quiet first half.

Coventry scored the decisive goal within 12 minutes of the restart. In-demand striker Viktor Gyokeres advanced forward at pace and managed to draw goalkeeper Zack Steffen off his line, eventually teeing up Gustavo Hamer to find a near-open net.

Hamer went close to adding a second when a free-kick rattled back off the crossbar, before Boro thought they had found a late equaliser courtesy of Matt Crooks, only for the offside flag to be raised.

Mark Robins' side lasted eight minutes of stoppage time to book their place in the Championship play-off final, with a 22-year exile from the top flight nearly at an end.
