Colorado Rapids hold talks with Jack Wilshere for head coach position
- Wilshere impressed in his interview with the Rapids - according to The Athletic
- Former assistant coach Chris Little currently leads the team as interim manager
- Colorado Rapids eliminated from playoff contention with 26 points in 32 games
The Colorado Rapids remain on the search for a new head coach since firing Robin Fraser in September, holding talks with potential new candidates including Jack Wilshere.
The Western Conference team are considering Wilshere, according to The Athletic, after he made a strong impression when leading Arsenal's Under-18 team to the 2023 FA Youth Cup final in his first season in charge. The publication also revealed the Rapids made a formal approach to Arsenal to speak with Wilshere, and have since conducted an interview.
The player turned coach kicked off his career in management on 11 July 2022, taking over the Arsenal Under-18 side just four days after announcing his retirement from playing. The move to the Rapids would see a significant jump in his career, trading in the academy side for a senior squad.
Former assistant coach Chris Little currently leads the team as interim manager, taking over for Fraser after guiding the team to last place with 26 points in 32 games and a record of 5W-16L-11D.
Fraser first joined the team in 2019 before compiling a 47W-48D-34L record in three seasons and managing consecutive postseason appearances in 2020 and 2021. He also led the Rapids to their best regular-season points total of all time in 2021 to club top the Western Conference for the first time in history.
But his previous efforts were not enough for the 2023 MLS campaign. Fans, however, continue to boycott Fraser's departure, claiming the owners and management have not invested enough in the team for a true chance to succeed.
The team has two regular-season games to play before heading into the offseason to prepare for 2024.
