Morecambe forward Cole Stockton has been voted the PFA Vertu Motors League One Fans' Player of the Month for September.

The 27-year-old has enjoyed a superb start to the season, seemingly adapting to playing a higher level with relative ease.

He's scored nine goals in 10 League One appearances this season for Morecambe, helping the club steer clear of relegation trouble after promotion from League Two.

The month of September was a brilliant one for Stockton as he bagged five goals in five appearances, also picking up an assist the Shrimps' win at Crewe.

Stockton saw off competition from Wigan striker Charlie Wyke to win the award, with the pair polling over 40% of the fan vote. Wyke had also had an impressive month, scoring four goals in as many appearances for the Latics.

Wyke's teammate, Will Keane, came third after picking up 18% of the vote, finishing narrowly ahead of Sunderland's Carl Winchester. Lincoln duo Tony Scully and Lewis Fiorini also made the six-player shortlist.

A strong opening to the month for Stockton saw him bag a brace against AFC Wimbledon, although his goals were not enough to prevent Morecambe slipping to a 4-3 defeat.

Victory over Crewe followed before Stockton claimed two more goals in another barnstorming game - this time a 3-3 draw with play-off chasing Accrington Stanley.

Stockton rounded off the monthly with another goal, this time in a winning effort as Morecambe overcame Lincoln 2-0, and that was enough convince to supporters that he was worthy of winning September's award.
