Lazio striker Ciro Immobile is being treated in hospital for back and rib injuries after being involved in a collision with a Rome tram in his car on Sunday.

The 34-year-old had scored his 10th Serie A goal of the season on Friday night as Lazio beat Spezia to make it four league wins in a row and strengthen their grip on second place – only a late collapse would deny the club a return to the Champions League group for only the second time in 15 years.

A Lazio statement explained that Immobile is in a ‘good’ condition.

“The medical staff of SS Lazio announces that, today, following a road accident, the footballer Ciro Immobile suffered a distortion trauma of the spine and a compound fracture of the right XI rib,” it read.

“The conditions are currently good. The footballer remains under observation in the emergency medicine department directed by Professor Francesco Franceschi of the Agostino Gemelli IRCCS University Hospital in Rome.”

The driver of the tram, as well as eight passengers, were also admitted to hospital.

Local media has reported that Immobile told police officers the tram driver ran a red light. But the driver denied that version of events, declaring, “I remember I passed a green traffic light and saw the car coming at full speed.”
