Manchester United have conducted an extensive medical with Christian Eriksen ahead of the completion of his arrival at the club.
Having narrowly avoided tragedy at Euro 2020 when his life was saved by medics upon going into cardiac arrest on the pitch, Eriksen was released by Inter due to Serie A rules over an ICD device spent the second half of last season rebuilding his career with Brentford.
The Dane, who had been one of the Premier League’s best attacking midfielders in the seven years between him joining Tottenham and heading to Italy, opted not to sign an extension to his short-term deal with Brentford and will move to Old Trafford as a free agent.
Eriksen will no doubt be a popular signing among United fans, which in turn could also make his shirt a popular addition to the club shop.
A few of the obvious Eriksen numbers are already taken at United. He wears number eight for Denmark, which is Bruno Fernandes’ new jersey, while the 23 he had a long association with at Tottenham is occupied by Luke Shaw.
Eriksen wore 21 during his time at Brentford. However, with that potentially also a primary choice for both Frenkie de Jong and Lisandro Martinez he could face competition.
Prior to joining Brentford, Eriksen wore the number 24 shirt during his brief spell at Inter. This remains vacant having last been worn by Timothy Fosu-Mensah, who was sold to Bayer Leverkusen in 2021.
Although not for a long time, Eriksen has been known to wear 14 very early in his international career. That is now free at Old Trafford because of Jesse Lingard’s exit. It could also be attractive because of Johan Cruyff connotations for the former Ajax player under a former Ajax manager.
Bruno Fernandes’ move to number eight has left United’s 18 shirt available. Ashley Young wore it for a number of years before the Portuguese, but its most famous occupant was Old Trafford legend Paul Scholes, a player with far greater similarities to Eriksen.
It may not be the most obvious choice for an attacking player, but Eriksen could even opt for number six if it remains vacant. Paul Pogba left it behind when he was released and it has been used for an attacking midfielder in an Erik ten Hag team before now - Donny van de Beek.
