Chelsea vs FC Porto: Complete head-to-head record

Having been handed a tricky tie against Atletico Madrid in the last 16 of this season's Champions League, Chelsea's reward for overcoming Diego Simeone's men is a quarter-final clash with FC Porto.

While Thomas Tuchel will undoubtedly be keen to avoid his side underestimating their last eight opponents, the Blues couldn't have asked for a much better draw given some of the stellar names remaining in this season's competition.

Not only have they managed to avoid the likes of Manchester City, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain, they've also been drawn against a side who they've performed well against in their previous meetings.

The Blues have now picked up six wins from their nine clashes with Porto, with the Portuguese side triumphing just twice.

Here's a look back at all eight previous encounters between the two sides since their first meeting in 2004.

1. Chelsea 3-1 Porto - September 2004

The first meeting between these two sides saw Jose Mourinho come face-to-face with his former employers, having departed the Champions League winners at the end of the 2003/04 season.

An early strike from Alexei Smertin (remember him?) set the Blues on their way before Didier Drogba doubled the lead shortly after half-time.

Benni McCarthy lashed home with 20 minutes to play to give the home side something to think about, before John Terry's header ensured Mourinho's men made it back-to-back wins to kick of their Champions League campaign.

2. Porto 2-1 Chelsea - December 2004

The return fixture saw the Blues suffer their first defeat of the competition, having taken four wins and a draw from their first five outings.

Top spot in Group H had already been secured by Chelsea before their trip to Estadio do Dragao, and Damien Duff's first-half strike had Porto heading for the Champions League exit door.

However, second-half goals from Diego and McCarthy rescued Porto as they scraped through to the knockout rounds of the competition in second place at the expense of CSKA Moscow.

3. Porto 1-1 Chelsea - February 2007

The only draw between Porto and Chelsea came back in February 2007 as the two sides met at the round of 16 stage of the Champions League.

Raul Meireles' 12th minute volley handed Porto an early lead, though Andriy Shevchenko's pinpoint left-footed drive gave the visitors a crucial away goal ahead of the second leg at Stamford Bridge.

4. Chelsea 2-1 Porto - March 2007

A 0-0 draw would have been enough for Mourinho's men to advance to the quarter-final stage, but any thoughts of parking the proverbial bus were soon banished as Ricardo Quaresma fired the visitors into a shock lead.

The Blues needed to score or they would be eliminated from the first knockout round, and Arjen Robben restored parity shortly after half-time before Michael Ballack's goal ten minutes from time meant it was Mourinho's men who would progress to the quarter-finals.

Victory over Valencia in the next round had Chelsea dreaming about going all the way, though their old foes Liverpool stopped them in their tracks in the semi-final.

5. Chelsea 1-0 Porto - September 2009

Having yet again been drawn together in the group stages of the Champions League, Chelsea kicked off their campaign with a 1-0 win over the Portuguese outfit in September 2009.

There was little to separate the two sides with the scores at 0-0 heading into the interval, but Nicolas Anelka proved to be the match-winner early in the second half as his powerful finish proved too hot to handle for Porto goalkeeper Helton.

6. Porto 0-1 Chelsea - November 2009

In an almost carbon copy of the first meeting between these two sides in Group D of the 2009/10 Champions League, Anelka grabbed the only goal of the game as he headed home Florent Malouda's pinpoint cross.

The 1-0 win at Estadio do Dragao ensured Chelsea would qualify as group winners, though it did little to improve their chances of reaching the latter stages of the tournament as they were knocked out by eventual winners Inter in the round of 16.

7. Porto 2-1 Chelsea - September 2015

Chelsea's most recent trip to Estadio do Dragao came back in September 2015.

Mourinho was yet again at the helm of the recently-crowned Premier League champions, though their nightmare start as they looked to retain their title carried over into the Champions League as they suffered only their second ever defeat to Porto.

Andre Andre 's early goal was cancelled out by Willian's equaliser shortly before half-time, but a second-half strike from Maicon ensured Porto claimed all three points.

Chelsea's Champions League campaign didn't get much better (same as their whole season really) and they were knocked out by Paris Saint-Germain in the round of 16.

8. Chelsea 2-0 Porto - December 2015

The reverse fixture at least saw Chelsea claim their revenge against the Portuguese side.

The match would be Mourinho's last Champions League outing in charge of Chelsea as he was handed his matching orders just eight days later, though he signed off from European football at Stamford Bridge with a comfortable 2-0 win thanks to goals from Willian and an Ivan Marcano own goal.

9. Porto 0-2 Chelsea - April 2021

Chelsea produced the perfect away knockout performance to put themselves on course for an unlikely Champions League semi-final in this relocated quarter-final first leg in Seville.

Mason Mount span his defender wonderfully before opening the scoring, then Ben Chilwell added a potentially killer second in the dying embers.
