Chelsea forwards Timo Werner and Kai Havertz both scored for Germany in the UEFA Nations League on Tuesday night, contributing towards a 3-3 draw with Switzerland.

Germany were initially 2-0 down inside 26 minutes at the game in Cologne, but Werner pulled the first one back soon afterwards and Havertz equalised after half-time. Switzerland went back ahead again, only for Bayern Munich’s Serge Gnabry to make it 3-3.

Havertz, who only turned 21 in June, admitted that Germany are currently a ‘young side’ that need to learn and improve. However, he also thought there were ‘plenty of positives’ to take away.

For Havertz, it was only the second goal of a fledgling senior international career, while he also assisted Werner’s goal, a good sign for Chelsea fans hoping for a flourishing relationship at Stamford Bridge over the months and years to come.

This month has marked Havertz’s first international appearances for a year, having not featured during the September international break.

As well as scoring his 13th international goal, Werner also got the assist for Gnabry’s equaliser.

Neither player, who cost Chelsea a combined £120m in the summer transfer market, has scored a Premier League goal yet. Each has started all four league games Chelsea have played.

The pair’s goals in Chelsea shirts have so far come exclusively in the Carabao Cup. Havertz netted a hat-trick in the third round against Barnsley, while Werner scored in the last round against Spurs.

Chelsea fans will be hoping both players can translate their goalscoring performances for Germany into domestic form when the Premier League season resumes at the weekend.

Having won only one of their last three league fixtures, Chelsea host Southampton at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, knowing a win could take them into the top four, depending on other results.
