Chelsea squad's staggering bonus for winning the Champions League

The Chelsea squad will split a bonus of £10m as a result of their Champions League triumph over Manchester City on Saturday.

Chelsea handed Pep Guardiola's side a lot of possession, but apart from one or two nervy moments, never really looked under pressure and waltzed to the biggest prize in club football thanks to a first-half strike from Kai Havertz.

As noted by the Daily Mail, just getting to the final saw the Chelsea squad seal a reward of £5m, and Roman Abramovich will now hand the players an extra £5m for going all the way and bringing his favourite trophy back to Stamford Bridge.

Bonuses at Chelsea are all shared equally, meaning every player in the matchday squad, including youngster Billy Gilmour and third-choice goalkeeper Willy Caballero, will take home the best part of £220,000.

Chelsea prefer to keep players on a level playing field when it comes to bonuses, whereas City had negotiated extra prizes with each player individually and were facing a pay-out of £15m if Pep Guardiola's side went all the way, with top earners like Kevin De Bruyne commanding £1m alone.

While bringing in £220,000 is obviously enough of a reward in itself, for the Chelsea players, the biggest prize was getting their hands on the Champions League trophy.

"I can’t put it into words, it’s impossible," said Mason Mount after the game (via the club's official website). "I played in two finals for Chelsea and we’ve lost them both in the FA Cup and the way that hurt after the game.

"I've dreamt as a kid of going all the way, making the final and winning it, lifting the trophy. That’s what I’m all about and what this club’s all about. I know it inside and out, I’ve been there as a kid and now to go all the way in the Champions League, with some tough games against top teams, it’s such a special occasion.

"At this moment in time, we’re the best team in the world and you can’t take that away from us!"
