Chelsea have signed Russian international defender Alsu Abdullina from Lokomotiv Moscow ahead of the second half of the WSL season.

Abdullina has signed a long-term contract with the Blues until the end of the 2023/24 season. She has been assigned the number 27 shirt and will link up with her new teammates in January.

“I am so happy to join Chelsea. This is a big change in my life, a new challenge. I am very proud to be part of this team, which has so many great players,” the 20-year-old told ChelseaFC.com.

“I want to continue to develop as a player and progress in London. I want to help the team to win as many trophies as possible.”

Blues boss Emma Hayes, who also recruited promising young Dutch defender Aniek Nouwen ahead of this season, added, "Alsu is a very good young player who has accumulated a lot of club and national appearances for her age, including winning the league a number of times with Lokomotiv.

“Alsu is a versatile player who can play any position on the left, adding more depth to the squad. We look forward to seeing how she develops in our environment over the next couple of years.”

In recent months, Norway international Guro Reiten, typically a more attacking player, has largely been filling in as a left wing-back or left-back in Chelsea’s system.

Despite her age, Abdullina already has significant experience. The left-back joined Lokomotiv from Chertanovo Moscow last year and was first capped at senior level by Russia when she was 16.

Abdullina will represent Russia at Euro 2022 in England next summer.
