Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has confirmed that Mason Mount will miss Saturday's meeting with Manchester City after picking up a knock in the Carabao Cup win over Aston Villa.

The England international played the second 45 minutes of the game and even stepped up to score in the penalty shoot-out, which Chelsea won to seal a meeting with Southampton in the fourth round.

Mount had seemed fine after the game, but Tuchel confirmed ahead of the City tie that the 22-year-old actually picked up a knock during his time on the pitch and has been unable to train properly over the past few days.

"It's too soon for Mason Mount," the boss revealed in his pre-match press conference. "He had a little, minor injury from the Aston Villa game. He made huge progress [since the Villa match] but it is not enough to be ready at 12:30 [on Saturday].

"He's very disappointed. I didn't see it during the match, obviously it happened in the second half but he played through the injury. He finished the game and was even confident enough to take an important penalty in the shoot-out, so it was a bit of a surprise.

"As for the recovery steps he is doing right now, they are huge. It's possible he could have played if the game was one day later. It's a very minor injury but it's a disappointment for him and for us because he is a player that we count on, but no matter what importance Mason has, the task is to find solutions without him."

Mount joins winger Christian Pulisic on the sidelines, but one player back in contention is goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, who has overcome a hip injury which forced him to miss Chelsea's last two games.

"He's available and he'll start," Tuchel said in his simple explanation of the situation.
