Chelsea have exercised an option to extend Jess Carter and Maren Mjelde's contracts for a further year, keeping the pair at the club until 2023.

Versatile defender and midfielder Mjelde joined Chelsea from Norwegian outfit Avaldsnes in 2016, and has gone on to win eight major trophies with the club.

The 32-year-old has endured a tough 18 months after suffering a serious knee injury during the 2021 Continental Cup final.

She made her first-team comeback in November, but was then sidelined once more until March and was restricted to just four appearances during Chelsea's 2021/22 WSL title-winning campaign.

Mjelde came off the bench at Wembley during the latter stages of the 2022 FA Cup final to help see the game out as Chelsea recorded a memorable 3-2 victory over Manchester City and signed off the season with a domestic double.

Carter joined Chelsea from Birmingham in 2018 and, having been on the periphery during her initial two seasons in west London, she has blossomed into an integral part of the Blues squad over the past 18 months.

The 24-year-old featured at both centre-back and right-back during the 2021/22 season, playing in 21 of Chelsea's 22 WSL matches as the Blues secured a third successive league title.

Carter's performances have seen her force her way back into the England set up and she has been named in Sarina Wiegman's provisional 28-player squad ahead of Euro 2022.
