Chelsea 3-2 Leeds: Player ratings as Jorginho penalties drag Blues to victory

Chelsea edged a five-goal thriller against Leeds at Stamford thanks to a penalty from Jorginho in the 93rd minute after it appeared that the visitors had rescued a point with a late goal themselves.

The Blues had to come from behind after Raphinha scored from the penalty spot for his seventh goal of the season to gives Leeds the first half advantage, but a Mason Mount equaliser in first half stoppage time and a first penalty from Jorginho just shy of the hour mark turned the game around.

Leeds thought they had secured a valuable point when teenage substitute Joe Gelhardt showed a clinical poacher’s instinct, only for a needless foul from Mateusz Klich on Antonio Rudiger to give Jorginho the chance to win it from the spot, which he gratefully took.

Leeds had threatened before they took the lead, with Raphinha testing Edouard Mendy’s alertness from a free-kick. The same player was composure personified as he fired a spot-kick past the Chelsea goalkeeper after Marco Alonso had wiped out Daniel James in the box.

Historically, it has been one of English football’s more volatile rivalries and the Brazilian saw fit to taunt the home fans after converting his penalty. There were a few tasty tackles in the first half as well, notably from Reece James and Tyler Roberts.

Playing aggressively on the front foot was what gave Chelsea their equaliser as Alonso made up for conceding the penalty by winning the ball high up the pitch and finding Mount with a low cross to the near post.

Having scored from the spot himself, Raphinha ended up giving away a penalty with a reckless challenge on Rudiger. It wasn’t given in real time but a thorough VAR check advised on-field referee Chris Kavanagh to take another look and he pointed to the spot.

Jorginho, cool as ever, fired it into the top corner with precious little run-up or back-lift.

Leeds still threatened, especially through Raphinha, and it looked as though they would struggle when their dangerman limped off with a knock. Gelhardt replaced him and only 81 seconds later had the ball in the net when he got in front of Thiago Silva to meet a low cross from Roberts.

But when Klich naively attempted to challenge Rudiger from behind in the penalty area deep into stoppage time, the game finally slipped out of Leeds’ reach when Jorginho stepped up again.

Chelsea didn't play well overall and punished Leeds for their mistakes, so this result will come as a relief for Thomas Tuchel and frustration for Marcelo Bielsa.

Edouard Mendy (GK) - 6/10 - Saved well from Raphinha free-kick in the first half. Didn't face much else in the way of shots.

Cesar Azpilicueta (CB) - 5/10 - Appeared to be struggling to cope with Raphinha as the game wore on and was replaced as a result.

Thiago Silva (CB) - 5/10 - Looked good bringing the ball out of defence but was caught cold by Gelhardt.

Antonio Rudiger (CB) - 6/10 - Won both penalties.

2. Midfielders & wing-backs

Reece James (RWB) - 6/10 - Almost caught Meslier out with a cheeky near post free-kick in the first half.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek (CM) - 5/10 - Didn't stand out.

Jorginho (CM) - 7/10 - Never in doubt that he would score from the penalty spot either time when presented with the opportunity.

Marcos Alonso (LWB) - 7/10 - Gave away a penalty when he was beaten to the ball in the penalty area by the sharper James. Made up for that with a precise pull-back for the equaliser.

3. Forwards

Mason Mount (RF) - 6/10 - Intelligent movement and finish to put Chelsea back level. Largely quiet before and after his goal.

Kai Havertz (ST) - 5/10 - Two big chances went begging in first half stoppage time. Hard task leading the line as a sole 'number nine'.

Timo Werner (LF) - 5/10 - Showed some promise but not involved enough.

4. Substitutes

Andreas Christensen (CB) - 5/10 - Brought on to give more defensive solidity but the equalising goal came down his side.

Callum Hudson-Odoi (LF) - 6/10 - Asked to provide fresh legs up front.

Romelu Lukaku (ST) - N/A - Not enough time.

Illan Meslier (GK) - 6/10 - Big save at the end of the first half to keep it level going into the break. Stood little chance with the goals.

Stuart Dallas (CB) - 6/10 - Caught on the ball in the build up the Chelsea equaliser. Came out on top in the battle with Werner.

Luke Ayling (CB) - 6/10 - Led a team ravaged by injuries.

Diego Llorente (CB) - 5/10 - Arguably could have been sharper to track Mount when Chelsea equalised in the first half.

6. Midfielders & wing-backs

Jamie Shackleton (RWB) - 5/10 - Worked hard but substituted not long after being shown a yellow card early in the second half.

Adam Forshaw (CM) - 7/10 - Struggled in the early stages of the game but shielded the back four well overall.

Tyler Roberts (CM) - 7/10 - Had to work hard to limit Chelsea's control and got his reward with an assist for the Leeds equaliser.

Junior Firpo (LWB) - 6/10 - Involved in the move for his team's second goal down that left flank. Generally held his own defensively.

7. Forwards

Raphinha (RW) - 7/10 - Was a threat for the 80 minutes he was on the pitch and scored from the spot. But he was reckless as he gave one away himself.

Daniel James (ST) - 6/10 - Had a fairly thankless task trying to lead the line. Did win the penalty though.

Jack Harrison (LW) - 6/10 - A lot of his work had to be defensive and deserves credit for that disciplined performance.

8. Substitutes

Mateusz Klich (CM) - 5/10 - Combative and energetic. Involved in the move that made it 2-2 but ruined an impactful performance by naively giving away the decisive soft penalty.

Joe Gelhardt (ST) - 7/10 - On the pitch for little more than a minute when he scored, showing intelligence beyond his years to get into the right place.
