Matchday four in the Champions League group stage was a memorable one.

There has been plenty of action over the course of Tuesday and Wednesday, with Manchester United leaving it late, Barcelona getting a crucial result, Real Madrid reaching a milestone goal and Liverpool securing a place in the knockout rounds among the headlines.

Here's everything that happened on matchday four...

Tuesday

Group E

Dynamo Kyiv 0-1 Barcelona

Barcelona were far from convincing but still secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Dynamo Kyiv, with Ansu Fati scoring the only goal in Ukraine to give interim head coach Sergi Barjuan his first win.

Dynamo created the better chances in the first half, with midfielder Mykola Shaparenko missing a pair of decent opportunities, while Barça went closest through Eric Garcia - who had a headed effort blocked.

After the break the Blaugrana continued to underwhelm, though they did have a penalty decision overturned following a VAR review. Soon after that Fati grabbed his goal, smashing home Oscar Mingueza's cross to earn his side a vital three points.

Bayern Munich 5-2 Benfica

One word to describe Bayern Munich? Here, have two: bloody scary. Julian Nagelsmann's machine ran riot at the Allianz Arena, dispatching Benfica 5-2 courtesy of some blistering attacking quality.

Robert Lewandowski stole the headlines courtesy of a hat-trick (and an assist) on his 100th Champions League appearance.

His 79th, 80th and 81st goals in the competition made a missed penalty - a really, really bad missed penalty - in the first half irrelevant, while Leroy Sane and Serge Gnabry also found the net to make Lucas Verissimo and Darwin Nunez goals mere consolation.

The victory sealed Die Roten's place in the competition's knockout phase, and all we can say to their future opponents is 'good luck!'

Group F

Villarreal 2-0 Young Boys

Villarreal completed a Champions League double over Young Boys on Tuesday, beating their Group F rivals 2-0 just two weeks after subjecting them to a 4-1 hammering in Switzerland.

Ex-Premier League plodders Etienne Capoue and Arnaut Danjuma scored the goals for the Yellow Submarine, with the result throwing the group wide open.

Capoue opened the scoring for Villarreal nine minutes before half-time and after weathering the storm nicely in the second half, Danjuma then made sure of the three points in the dying embers.

Manchester United left it late again in the Champions League as they salvaged a 2-2 draw with Atalanta.

Josip Ilicic gave the hosts the lead after David de Gea spilled his weak shot in, before Cristiano Ronaldo equalised on the stroke of half-time.

Atalanta had the lead again after Duvan Zapata beat the offside trap to take advantage of a disorganised United defence and looked good value for the win, but Ronaldo rescued a point in stoppage time with a scintillating strike from the edge of the area.

Group G

Wolfsburg picked up a vital victory on Tuesday night, securing a 2-1 win over table-topping RB Salzburg to throw Group G wide open going into the final two matchdays.

Die Wolfe have made a slow start to the Bundesliga season and had not won any of their first three European games this campaign, but they impressed against the Austrian champions.

Ridle Baku got his side off to the perfect start with a goal inside three minutes before Die Roten Bullen pegged them back through Maximilian Wober on the half-hour mark. Wolfsburg would then have the last laugh when Lukas Nmecha grabbed a winner with 60 minutes on the clock.

Sevilla 1-2 Lille

Lille picked up an impressive 2-1 away win over Sevilla, with the result moving them to second place - level on points with Wolfsburg with two games left to play in Group G.

The hosts had taken the lead early on through Lucas Ocampos but the Spaniards struggled to carve out clear-cut chances thereafter, opening the door for Les Dogues' comeback.

First, Jonathan David equalised from the penalty spot just before the break. Early in the second half Nanitamo Ikone opped up with what turned out to be the winner.

Group H

Malmo 0-1 Chelsea

Chelsea laboured to a 1-0 win over Group H whipping boys Malmo in Sweden, with Hakim Ziyech grabbing the only goal of the game.

In a drab first half, Kai Havertz had the best chance, squandering a one-on-one following good work from Ruben Loftus-Cheek in midfield.

11 minutes into the second half Chelsea eventually got the breakthrough. Callum Hudson-Odoi combined nicely with Havertz, with the former bursting clear to lay it off for Ziyech to finish into an empty net. Thiago Silva and Havertz - again - missed further chances before the end, but one goal proved enough.

Juventus sealed their place in the last 16 with a dominant 4-2 victory over Zenit in Turin.

The hosts made a fast start and Paulo Dybala opened the scoring early on as he fired the ball into the ground to send it looping over the goalkeeper, but Juve were pegged back by a really bizarre Leonardo Bonucci own goal to leave the scores level at the break.

However, Juve asserted their dominance in the second half, going ahead through Dybala's re-taken penalty before a fine finish from Federico Chiesa and Alvaro Morata's untidy strike made it 4-1. Sardar Azmoun added a late second for Zenit but it was too little, too late.

Group A

Man City 4-1 Club Brugge

Manchester City struggled to get out of second gear in the first half against Club Brugge, only to then turn it on in the final half hour and surge away from their Belgian counterparts.

Full-back Joao Cancelo finished the night with a hat-trick of assists, laying on goals for Phil Foden, Riyad Mahrez and Gabriel Jesus, while Raheem Sterling also got in on the act.

But City didn't have it all their own way. John Stones unwittingly scored an own goal barely any time after his team had gone ahead, while Brugge forward Charles De Keteleare missed a chance at 1-1.

RB Leipzig 2-2 PSG

Paris Saint-Germain surrendered top spot in Group A after conceding a stoppage time equaliser in a 2-2 draw at RB Leipzig.

Former PSG man Christopher Nkunku gave the hosts an early lead, but Andre Silva was denied from the penalty spot by Gianluigi Donnarumma soon after.

Georginio Wijnaldum scored a first half brace to turn the game around, but Kylian Mbappe spurned several chances to extend the lead.

That wastefulness came back to haunt them as Presnel Kimpembe gave away another late penalty, which was converted by Dominik Szoboszlai and PSG had to settle for a point.

Group B

AC Milan 1-1 Porto

AC Milan finally got their first point of the Champions League group stage after an own goal from Porto defender Chancel Mbemba secured the Rossoneri a 1-1 draw at San Siro.

Porto took the lead early on and looked to be condemning Milan to more European misery when Luis Diaz fond the net just six minutes into the contest.

It was the visitors who created more in the way of chances, although Milan got back on level terms when Mbemba turned the ball into his own net just after the hour mark.

Liverpool 2-0 Atletico Madrid

Liverpool enjoyed another impressive win over Atletico Madrid, who finished a contentious game at Anfield with 10 players following the dismissal of centre-back Felipe.

The Red went ahead early when Trent Alexander-Arnold fed Diogo Jota inside the opening 13 minutes. It wasn't long before the full-back did the same for Sadio Mane.

Felipe saw red in the first half for a cynical foul on Mane, while the result now sends Liverpool through to the last 16 of the competition with two group games to spare.

Sporting CP scored four goals for the second Champions League game in a row as they won 4-0 against Besiktas in Lisbon, having thrashed the same opponent last time out.

The damage was done in the first half at the Jose Alvalade stadium as Pedro Goncalves gave the hosts the lead from the penalty spot. He doubled that advantage himself a few minutes later, while Paulinho extended it to 3-0 before half-time.

The game was already over as a contest, but Pablo Sarabia made it 4-0 early in the second half.

Borussia Dortmund 1-3 Ajax

Borussia Dortmund were convincingly beaten by Ajax for the second time this season, having already lost 4-0 in Amsterdam on matchday three. This time it was a 3-1 defeat on their own turf.

Without the injured Erling Haaland, Dortmund were lacking. But even though Mats Hummels was controversially sent off in the first half, they did take the lead through Marco Reus from the penalty spot.

Ajax made their man advantage count later on. Dusan Tadic equalised with just under 20 minutes left to play, before Sebastien Haller got the go-ahead goal 11 minutes after that. Davy Klaassen then made sure of the comeback win in stoppage time.

Group D

Real Madrid 2-1 Shakhtar Donetsk

Karim Benzema grabbed a brace, with both goals being assisted by Vinicius Junior, as Real Madrid secured an important 2-1 victory over Shakhtar Donetsk which put them top of Champions League Group D.

Real started strongly and went ahead when Vini Jr dispossessed Marlon inside his own box before laying one on a plate for his partner-in-crime to tap home.

Shakhtar rallied after this though, drawing level through Fernando just before half-time. After the break Real scored the winner, with Benzema finishing off a beautiful team goal.

Inter secured an important 3-1 win over Sheriff on Wednesday night, with the result leaving Champions League Group D wide open with two games left to play.

The Nerazzurri peppered their opponents goal with shots in the first half but could not find a breakthrough. Soon after the break they finally took the lead through Marcelo Brozovic, who created space on the edge of the box with a smart turn before firing home.

Milan Skriniar and substitute Alexis Sanchez added further goals in the second half before Sheriff grabbed a consolation through Adama Traore with one of the final kicks of the game.
