The Champions League round of 16 continued on Wednesday night, with Liverpool emerging victorious in their first leg tie against Inter, while Bayern Munich left it late to avoid what would have been an embarrassing defeat against Red Bull Salzburg.

Substitute Roberto Firmino made the all-important breakthrough for Liverpool in Milan, flicking in a near post header. That was after the Reds had first weathered a storm that should probably have seen Inter go ahead during a dominant spell early in the second half.

In the end, the Nerazzurri paid the price for failing to take their chances and Mohamed Salah eventually made sure of the Liverpool victory.

Over in Austria, Kingsley Coman was the hero of the hour for Bayern Munich as they snatched a late 1-1 draw to deny Salzburg an historic result for them. Chukwubuike Adamu got the early opener after coming off the bench only 12 minutes into the game.

Salzburg had other chances and kept Bayern at bay until almost the very end. But their resistance finally broke when Thomas Muller laid on an equaliser for Coman.

Tuesday had already seen Manchester City ease to a 5-0 thrashing of Sporting CP in Lisbon - not that away goals count for extra like they used to - and Paris Saint-Germain earn a last-minute win over Real Madrid at the Parc des Princes through Kylian Mbappe.

The remainder of the last 16 first leg ties will continue next week, including Chelsea hosting Lille and Manchester United's trip to Atletico Madrid.

This was how all of the action from Wednesday night unfolded in Milan and Salzburg...

9:53pm - FT: Inter 0-2 Liverpool; Salzburg 1-1 Bayern - Full-time in both of tonight's games. Liverpool take a strong advantage into the second leg at Anfield, while Bayern still have work to do.

9:50pm - Bayern look to have avoided an embarrassing defeat. Their late equaliser has come courtesy of Kingsley Coman, who had always looked most likely to get the German champions back on level terms. No away goals rule anymore, however.

9:49pm - GOAL! Salzburg 1-1 Bayern

9:48pm - Too little too late for Inter or simply trying to stem the growing Red tide? Matteo Darmian, Andrea Ranocchia and Roberto Gagliardini are all on.

9:45pm - Inter will now be fully ruing their failure to take their earlier chances. Meanwhile, Liverpool have brought on James Milner for his 800th club appearance.

9:44pm - Scruffy finish from Mohamed Salah, but neither he nor Liverpool will care. Virgil van Dijk knocked down a high cross from Trent Alexander-Arnold and then it was just about the Egyptian King swinging a leg at it after Inter failed to clear.

9:43pm - GOAL! Inter 0-2 Liverpool

9:38pm - In the meantime, Philipp Kohn has preserved Salzburg's lead with an outstanding double save to deny Kingsley Coman and then Leroy Sane on the rebound. At the other end Benjamin Pavard makes a last-ditch block to keep Bayern in it.

9:36pm - The perfect impact from substitute Roberto Firmino. The Brazilian met Andrew Robertson's in-swinging corner at the near post and flicked his header across the goal to give Liverpool what might be considered an unexpected lead in the circumstances.

9:35pm - GOAL! Inter 0-1 Liverpool

9:30pm - Alexis Sanchez is on for Inter. He famously rejected Liverpool for Arsenal in 2014.

9:28pm - Still no breakthrough for Bayern. They're having all of the ball but Salzburg are hanging in there.

9:26pm - 17 total shots between Inter & Liverpool, but still not a single one on target...huh.

9:22pm - There was more than half an hour left when Luis Diaz came on for Sadio Mane. Could this be an early sign of things to come for the Senegalese star? Diaz has already made a positive impact and it took a timely block from Milan Skriniar to deny him an instant goal.

9:20pm - Edin Dzeko has the ball in the net...but the offside flag goes up. Liverpool off the hook.

9:19pm - Liverpool desperately need to change the flow of this game, so Jurgen Klopp is bringing Luis Diaz, Jordan Henderson and Naby Keita off the bench all in one go. Harvey Elliott, Sadio Mane and Fabinho are the players who make way.

9:17pm - Bayern have taken control of their game, although are struggling to open the door. Kingsley Coman is running the show now, while Robert Lewandowski is a mere spectator...

9:13pm - Liverpool are under pressure! Inter have started much better since the break. Arturo Vidal just sat Fabinho down with a Cruyff turn on the edge of the box and a cross from Edin Dzeko somehow missed everyone. Moments later, Lautaro Martinez just missed an Ivan Perisic cross.

9:08pm - High and wide from Kingsley Coman in Salzburg as Bayern look to make a fast start to the second half. This would be a famous result if it were to stay like this.

9:05pm - Roberto Firmino is on as a substitute for Liverpool, replacing Diogo Jota. Stefan de Vrij has also surprisingly re-emerged for Inter after the break, despite twice receiving treatment for a head injury during the opening 45 minutes.

Half-time: Bayern trail at the interval and, on balance, probably don't deserve a different score-line. Inter and Liverpool is finely balanced at San Siro. Both sides have had the potential to ahead in an entertaining contest but neither have really tested either goalkeeper in the opening 45 minutes.

8:48pm - In the final moments before half-time, Bayern survived a penalty scare. Salzburg youngster Karim Adeyemi went down under pressure from Benjamin Pavard.

8:45pm - Virgil van Dijk to the rescue...the recovery pace from the Liverpool captain has just saved them from going behind. Edin Dzeko was through on goal but couldn't make the most of it.

8:42pm - Decent chance for Inter! Probably the closest either side has come since Calhanoglu hit the bar earlier. Milan Skriniar flashes a dangerous header just wide from a corner.

8:33pm - Should have done better! Leroy Sane has missed the target to get Bayern back on level terms after being found in the penalty areas by Serge Gnabry.

8:29pm - Mane has gone for another overhead kick and hits the side netting.

8:27pm - Salzburg know a one-goal cushion won't be enough and are chasing more. Brenden Aaronson has just forced stand-in Bayern stopper Sven Ulreich into a decent save.

8:24pm - Chukwubuike Adamu with the Salzburg goal. A wonderful curling finish after a rapid counter attack. Bayern were enjoying the better chances overall but that counts for nothing.

8:23pm - GOAL! Salzburg 1-0 Bayern

8:19pm - Even closer! This time it's Inter. Hakan Calhanoglu has hit the crossbar.

8:15pm - Close! Mane can't quite get his header on target from a deep Liverpool free-kick.

8:12pm - Open start in Austria. Bayern have dominated the ball and have had the first few attempts on target, one through Serge Gnabry. But Red Bull have had more shots overall at this early stage.

8:10pm - Liverpool have had a couple of half chances. Better contact from Sadio Mane at an attempted overhead kick could have resulted in a goal, while Thiago has landed the ball on the roof of the net from distance and had Samir Handanovic a little worried.

Both games underway!
