Real Madrid have been described as ‘increasingly confident’ of securing a deal for Manchester City midfielder Caroline Weir, who has consistently been one of the best players in the WSL.

City have already seen Georgia Stanway opt to leave the club at the end of her contract this summer, with the England international signing a three-year deal with Bayern Munich.

Lucy Bronze is also out of contract ahead of next season and is weighing up a move to the United States. Weir is in a similar boat and is ever more likely to head to Spain for a fresh challenge.

The potential departures of Bronze and Weir on top of Stanway’s existing exit would come as a huge blow to the club, especially in the wake of manager Gareth Taylor expressing hope for stability with relatively little incoming or outgoing transfer activity during the summer window.

Weir was first linked with a switch to Real Madrid, who knocked City out of this season’s Champions League in the qualifying rounds and eventually reached the quarter-finals, several weeks ago.

Speculation has been growing and the Daily Telegraph has now reported a deal is ‘edging closer’, although there is no timeframe and confirmation may not come as quick as with Stanway.

Weir is arguably most famous for back-to-back Puskas Award nominations in 2020 and 2021 and could bring fresh star quality to an ambitious Real side looking to challenge Barcelona domestically.

BBC Sport has additionally reported that Keira Walsh is also attracting interest from elsewhere. Should that come to fruition and she leave the club as well, City could potentially have lost their three preferred central midfield starters by the time the summer draws to a close.
