Carlos Vela and LAFC have reportedly agreed to a contract extension, keeping the Mexican at the club through the 2023 season.

The player will also maintain his Designated Player status on the roster, according to MLSsoccer.com.

Vela’s current contract was set to expire on June 30, inspiring rumors that the player would depart for another MLS side or even abroad, but it appears he’s staying put.

The forward has been the face of the club since joining during the inaugural season in 2018. He kicked off his Major League Soccer career with a bang, recording the best individual season in history to win the 2019 MLS MVP. That season, he also led LAFC to a Supporters’ Shield title.

Five seasons in, Vela has managed 61 goals and 37 assists in only 93 appearances.

Though he suffered two injury-riddled seasons, he’s back with no signs of stopping. He started the 2022 campaign with four goals and two assists, recording a hat-trick in the first game of the season.

With his help, LAFC sits atop the Western Conference.
