Carlos Salcedo has been issued a retroactive red card by the Major League Soccer Disciplinary Committee for 'serious foul play' during Toronto FC’s match against the New York Red Bulls.

The defender now faces a one match suspension, and has been issued an undisclosed fine for the incident. He will now miss the clash vs. the Columbus Crew on Saturday at Lower.com Field.

The committee cited the 60th minute challenge by Salcedo on Red Bulls Patryk Klimala that saw the defender complete a dangerous tackle that forced the forward to the ground. Salcedo received an immediate yellow card, but has since been reviewed and modified to a retroactive red.

“The play was reviewed under MLS Disciplinary Committee Parameter 3, where the match officials see an incident, and do not issue a red card on a case of clear and obvious simulation/embellishment that meets the conditions for suspension,” cited the MLS Disciplinary Committee.

“Under Parameter 3, the MLS Disciplinary Committee shall issue either a one-match suspension on incidents in which the Professional Referee Organization acknowledges an on-field Referee/Video Assistant Referee (VAR) error and the Committee is unanimous at red card and one-match suspension and action taken; or, the MLS Disciplinary Committee shall issue a two or more match suspension on incidents in which discipline warrants at least a two-match suspension.

“The incident in question must be, in the unanimous opinion of the Committee from all available evidence: a clear and unequivocal red card; and egregious or repeat behavior in nature, and/or such that the MLS Disciplinary Committee must act to protect player safety or the integrity of the game; and/or clear and obvious simulation.”

This is the first time the player has been cited by the organization.

Salcedo recently joined Toronto FC, arriving in the offseason after the MLS club reached an agreement with Liga MX side Tigres UANL. The Mexican arrived at Toronto as a Designated Player through the 2024 season, with an option for 2025.

As per team and Major League Soccer policy, terms of the contract are confidential.
