Bruno Fernandes slams Man Utd's mentality and defending in Everton draw

Bruno Fernandes couldn't contain his anger in the wake of Manchester United's 3-3 draw with Everton as he let loose on his team-mates after another poor defensive performance at Old Trafford.

United suffered a blow to their title credentials late on when a hopeful punt into the box from Lucas Digne caused havoc in David de Gea's box, eventually leading to Dominic Calvert-Lewin equalising with the last kick of the ball.

It was a game United had already threatened to let slip once: after Fernandes had doubled their lead on the stroke of half-time with a stunning finish, an awful start to the second half let Everton back into it, only for Scott McTominay to restore their lead with a header on 70 minutes.

But deep into stoppage time, Digne floated one in from around the half-way line which United failed to clear, and Calvert-Lewin bundled in his 17th goal of the season. It was the 30th goal Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's team have conceded in the Premier League this season, meaning they now have the worst defensive record in the top half of the table.

And Fernandes? Not a happy chap.

He told reporters: "I think we gave away the result, we gave away the game twice, because after being 2-0 up at half-time, coming into second half in the way we did, it’s really bad.

"We are conceding goals every game, we are conceding goals a lot of times and at home we concede too many goals. Too many bad results at home and this can’t be possible.

"I think we have to win this game after being 2-0 up, you have to win this game. It doesn’t matter how. You concede two goals and you come again and you score again.

"It’s impossible to concede another goal again, from a free-kick near the half-way line, but we concede a goal from there."

There were post-match suggestions that a degree of complacency had seeped into United's mindset after McTominay restored their advantage. And Fernandes, visibly fuming, wasn't ruling that out.

"Maybe this was the problem, I don’t know. I don’t feel that, I don’t know what my team-mates feel but we can’t feel that until the game is over. But as you see, we concede the goal in the last seconds of the game."
