Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes has urged the club to move for Sporting left-back Nuno Mendes this summer.
The 18-year-old has impressed at Fernandes' former employers this season as they sit top of the Primeira Liga, making 20 appearances thus far.
United have a healthy roster of left-backs, but have recently started making a conscious effort to sign highly-rated young footballers from across the globe.
Mendes could be next on that list, according to Portuguese outlet Record at least, who claim that Fernandes is pushing the club to make a move for the teenager, who he played with before signing for United himself in January 2020.
Manchester City plan move for Sporting's Nuno Mendes with initial discussions having already taken place
Manchester United are willing to double Bruno Fernandes' salary in order to convince him to sign a new deal at Old Trafford.
Man Utd Women have confirmed that manager Casey Stoney has resigned from her position.
Player ratings as Leicester City secured a 2-1 win over Man Utd thanks to Luke Thomas & Caglar Soyuncu goals.
They further report that current Man Utd left-back Alex Telles could be offered to Sporting as part of a swap deal in order to facilitate the move, which would see their more experienced left-back replaced with a younger alternative, despite Telles himself only arriving from the Primeira Liga last summer.
While the move would be a rather unusual one considering Telles has barely been at Old Trafford for a year, there is logic in the sense that Mendes would be an option for the future and fits in more with United's recruitment process as of late, particularly when looking at the signings of Facundo Pellistri and Amad Diallo.
Mendes has made 35 appearances for Sporting's first team despite being just 18 years old and would arrive at United with some senior experience already under his belt. It still doesn't fix any direct issues, however, with the club still lacking those same options at right-back.
Telles has managed just 18 appearances so far for United, with Luke Shaw finding his best form and keeping him out of the first-choice XI. The Englishman has created more chances than any other defender in the Premier League this season and recently been recalled to the national side.
It could tempt the Brazilian into considering a departure, but swapping him for another left-back feels somewhat low on United's list of priorities.
