Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes is expected to wait until the end of the season before accepting the club's proposal of contract talks.

Fernandes only joined the club in January 2020 but has quickly established himself as one of the best midfielders in world football, racking up 30 goals and 20 assists in his 55 appearances for the club to date.

He signed a five-year deal worth £100,000-a-week when he joined the club, but The Athletic note that United are keen to reward Fernandes with a bumper new deal to reflect his importance to the club.

The idea of a new deal was first proposed back in November 2020, but Fernandes is in no rush to ink fresh terms. Instead, he plans to wait until the end of the season to see where United find themselves before making any extra commitment.

Fernandes dreams of winning silverware, and at 26 years old, he wants to make sure he doesn't limit himself. He's already under contract until 2025, with United also holding the option to extend it by a further year, so he will be 31 by the time his current deal expires.

That viewpoint is not unique to Fernandes. Most players at the same point of their careers do the same thing, particularly as any wage increase and contract extension would only raise his asking price even further.

It's pretty simple really. If United show they can genuinely compete for trophies, Fernandes will be open to re-signing. He's not the first player to feel like that and he won't be the last.

Fernandes has repeatedly stressed his desire to instil a winning mentality into the Red Devils' squad, admitting after his team's 3-3 draw with Everton that there is still work to do before United get to where they want to be.

“We were making so many mistakes in the last few games and we can’t keep conceding goals like that," he told MUTV (via Manchester Evening News). "We have to be more focused, we have to have the same desire to score and to defend our goal.

“Every time we have to make goals and score goals it has to be the same to not concede and I think we have to learn from this. It has already happened a lot of times so it is more than a bit disappointing. You talk about everything that is going on but it is about learning and make it better.”
