Manchester United have confirmed that Bruno Fernandes has been crowned the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year for the 2020/2021 season.
Voted for by supporters in over 200 countries, in truth there could have only ever been one winner. Fernandes has been transformative since arriving from Sporting CP last January, barely missing a game since.
During his maiden season at the club he hit the ground running, managing 12 goals and eight assists in just 22 games. His form was mightily impressive considering his settling in period in Manchester was complicated by the coronavirus pandemic.
Fernandes has continued to shine during the current campaign as well. This season he has managed 28 goals thus far - making him the club's top scorer - and 17 assists in all competitions, helping United secure second place in the Premier League and also reach the Europa League final. He has been named man of the match on 12 occasions this season, with Edinson Cavani his closest competitor with just five.
In the end, Fernandes received a whopping 63% of the fan vote to clinch top spot. Luke Shaw - who has enjoyed his best ever season in a red shirt - and Cavani finished second and third respectively. Marcus Rashford, who has managed 11 Premier League goals and the same number of assists this season, took fourth spot. Meanwhile, Mason Greenwood earned enough votes for fifth.
Fernandes will be hoping to cap off a fine personal season by lifting his first piece of silverware for United. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side take on Villarreal in the Europa League final on Wednesday 26 May, after going out of the competition at the semi-final stage last time around. They could be without captain Harry Maguire due to injury. If so, Fernandes will likely wear the armband in Gdansk.
