From the AMEX - Prospective Newcastle manager Eddie Howe watched on from the stands as the Magpies came from behind to earn a 1-1 draw with Brighton on the south coast on Saturday night.

A lengthy VAR check eventually saw the hosts given a penalty for Ciaran Clark's clumsy challenge on Leandro Trossard. The Belgian rattled the spot kick into the top corner to follow up his strike at Liverpool last week.

Former Bournemouth boss Howe was in the stands as talks with Newcastle continue and he would have heard the 'ole, ole, ole' chants the home fans bellowed out as the Magpies struggled for fluidity during a one-sided first half.

While Brighton dominated, they failed to put the game to bed and were stung when Isaac Hayden slammed in from close range for a barely deserved equaliser in the second half.

The game ended in stalemate but there was enough time for Robert Sanchez to be sent off when he was adjudged to have brought down Callum Wilson when the striker was heading clean through on goal late on.

The result sees Brighton go sixth in the Premier League table, while Newcastle stay 19th.

Here are the player ratings from the AMEX...

BRIGHTON PLAYER RATINGS

1. Goalkeeper & defenders

Marc Cucurella, Miguel Almiron

Robert Sanchez (GK) - 5/10 - A few shoddy and sketchy passes as Brighton played out from the back but was rarely called into any action that required his gloves. Barely touched Wilson but sent off anyway.

Joel Veltman (RB) - 6/10 - A more reserved defender with the rampant Lamptey ahead of him. Did his job well and pushed further forward when Lamptey was withdrawn.

Shane Duffy (CB) - 6/10 - Had a header from a corner saved by Darlow. Some typical no-nonsense clearances in a solid display.

Lewis Dunk (CB) - 6/10 - Calm and composed whenever he needed to mop up any loose ball.

Marc Cucurella (LB) - 7/10 - His curly hair bounced up and down the left at ferocious pace. Another good display and is settling in well in his new surroundings. Headed a good opportunity wide from Trossard's cross.

2. Midfielders

Yves Bissouma (DM) - 7/10 - Dropped deeper once Brighton had the opening goal. The only way Newcastle's midfielders got near him was by fouling him. Booked late on.

Adam Lallana (CM) - 7/10 - So fluid and kept the ball moving whenever Brighton were in the ascendancy. Becoming a very important fixture in Brighton's starting XI. Sent a good opportunity wide from the edge of the box. Booked for a challenge on Saint-Maximin.

Enock Mwepu (CM) - 6/10 - Has been excellent in recent weeks and was good again here. Readily available to receive the ball.

3. Forwards

Tariq Lamptey (RW) - 7/10 - A great driving presence, playing further upfield than usual. Fizzed a low ball across goal which just needed a slight touch for Brighton's second. Had Ritchie on toast.

Leandro Trossard (ST) - 8/10 - Earned the penalty and tucked it away with minimal fuss. Linked play nicely, bringing others into play with ease.

Solly March (LW) - 6/10 - Headed wide at the back post after terrific work from Lamptey.

4. Substitutes

Alexis Mac Allister (CM) - 5/10

Neal Maupay (ST) - 5/10

Adam Webster (CB) - 5/10

5. Goalkeeper & defenders

Karl Darlow (GK) - 6/10 - Sent the wrong way by Trossard's penalty. Saved well at his near post from Trossard's strike.

Emil Krafth (CB) - 5/10 - Like his defensive colleagues, couldn't exert any authority on proceedings.

Jamaal Lascelles (CB) - 5/10 - Hit Trossard late to pick up a yellow card. Looked unstable and unsure throughout with some loose headers.

Ciaran Clark (CB) - 5/10 - Barged into Trossard to concede the penalty. Nodded the ball across goal for Hayden's strike.

6. Wing backs & midfielders

Matt Ritchie, Tariq Lamptey

Jacob Murphy (RWB) - 5/10 - Lost the ball frequently to Brighton's press. Did get clear early on but dragged his shot wide. Booked for clattering into Cucurella.

Isaac Hayden (CM) - 6/10 - Made some tackles and was chasing shadows for the majority of the contest before he slammed in the equaliser.

Jonjo Shelvey (CM) - 5/10 - Difficult to see what his role was in a game where his side had little of the ball. Booked for smashing Trossard.

Matt Ritchie (LWB) - 5/10 - Really struggled when confronted by Lamptey. Didn't get too many issues to deliver any crosses.

7. Forwards

Miguel Almiron (RW) - 4/10 - Like Murphy, couldn't keep the ball whenever Brighton swarmed. Pretty anonymous throughout.

Callum Wilson (ST) - 5/10 - Given little to no service throughout the game. Got Sanchez sent off.

Allan Saint-Maximin (LW) - 6/10 - Started brightly, escaping some tight spots with his classic all-action dribbling. Buzzed around without creating anything.

8. Substitutes

Joelinton (ST) - 5/10

Dwight Gayle (ST) - N/A
