From Gtech Community Stadium - Brentford suffered a Carabao Cup upset late on Tuesday evening after falling to Gillingham on penalties.

Thomas Frank opted to name a strong Bees side against a team that is currently 22nd in League Two, with a few World Cup hopefuls playing with joy and freedom, though there were many fringe players failed to impress on rare starts.

The Bees took a fifth-minute lead when David Raya's long ball over the top of the Gillingham defence was met by Mikkel Damsgaard, whom opted to unselfishly square it to Ivan Toney to tap into an empty net.

Summer signing Keane Lewis-Potter saw a lot of the ball down the right wing in the opening exchanges, notably crossing for Saman Ghoddos after 15 minutes, but the Iranian's header sailed over the top.

A quick free-kick from Damsgaard caught the Gills defence napping and was volleyed towards goal by the returning Christian Norgaard, but Jake Turner managed to deny the Dane.

Damsgaard went close to grabbing his first Brentford goal after Toney's through ball found him in the six yard box, but his touch was poor and Gillingham were let off the hook.

The former Sampdoria star went closer when he flicked on a Frank Onyeka cross with his heel, and the ball only narrowly trickled wide of the net.

A deep cross from Damsgaard was headed on by Toney but excellently kept out by Turner, with Ghoddos instinctively heading the rebound but only against the upright.

After the break, Toney should have doubled the lead after being slipped through by substitute Josh Dasilva, only for the England striker's low effort to somehow miss the target.

Onyeka's last contribution before being hooked was to force Turner into a stretching save with a curler from distance.

Brentford were punished for their wastefulness when Mikael Mandron headed Gillingham level with their first attempt of the evening and with just a quarter of an hour remaining.

Ethan Pinnock was denied by the foot of Turner from a corner as the Bees threw every man forward in search of a winner, but that was as close as they came to finding a winner and the tie went to penalties.

Damsgaard missed the final kick of the shootout as Gillingham secured a famous win.
