Brazil are set to be without talisman Neymar for the remainder of the group stages, while versatile defender Danilo is also likely to be sidelined until the knockout stages.

The Selecao opened their group stage campaign with a 2-0 win against Serbia on Thursday night. Tottenham Hotspur forward Richarlison grabbed a decisive brace, with his second - an acrobatic overhead kick after flicking the ball up - one of the goals of the tournament so far.

Neymar didn't have his best game but spent much of the evening getting clattered into and fouled profusely, eventually being substituted after 79 minutes with an ankle problem.

The 30-year-old, who has missed large portions of the last few years on the treatment table, was briefly seen in tears on the touchline in fear that his newest ailment might be serious.

Brazilian outlet Globo now report that Neymar and teammate Danilo will not take any further part in the group stages of the World Cup, and will instead look to return once the knockout stages commence.

Should Brazil win Group G, they will face the runners-up of Group H at Stadium 974 on December 5. If they come second, they will play the winners of Group H at Lusail Stadium on December 6.

Brazil's next game comes against Switzerland on November 28, before they round off the group stage against Cameroon on December 2.
