Borussia Dortmund host the reigning Belgian champions Club Brugge in the Champions League group stage on Tuesday evening.

Lucien Favre's BVB top their tightly-contested group, sitting two points ahead of Club Brugge with Serie A side Lazio sandwiched between the pair after three games. The force of nature that is Erling Haaland netted twice when Dortmund last faced Club Brugges, and has only added more goals and personal accolades in the three weeks since.

Club Brugge have only ever reached the Champions League group stage eight times since its rebranding, never progressing to the knockout stages. However, they have earned a passage to the Europa League by finishing third in each of the past two seasons, the same position they currently occupy and one which won't likely be decided by their results against a Borussia Dortmund team with loftier ambitions.

While their youth-infused attack has been as deadly as ever, that they have conceded just seven league goals - the third lowest in the division - is perhaps more promising. Dortmund can even take positives from their loss to Bayern Munich before the international break, as they created the better chances in a match which highlighted some flaws in the reigning champions.

Prediction

Club Brugge's impressive 1-1 draw at home to Lazio - which could have been a win had the hosts been more clinical - suggested the Belgian champs have the potential to mix it with the group's favourites.

However, they were blown away by an electric half-hour from Dortmund and have won just two of their last 23 fixtures in the Champions League proper. If the defensive improvement to Favre's side continues, Dortmund's aspirations will lie well beyond beating Club Brugge at home on Tuesday night.
