Borussia Dortmund 2-2 Sevilla: Player ratings as Haaland hauls BVB into Champions League quarter-finals

Erling Haaland inevitably starred as Borussia Dortmund edged into the last eight of the Champions League on Tuesday night.

The Norwegian sensation was the protagonist yet again, netting a brace, including a retaken penalty, and picking up a booking for a bit of sh••housery to boot.

Dortmund opened the scoring on 35 minutes, slicing through the Sevilla defence with an incisive move before Haaland tapped home from a Marco Reus cut-back.

They doubled their lead shortly after half-time following some VAR drama; first Haaland had a goal ruled out for a foul, but was awarded a penalty for an earlier shirt pull instead. He took and missed the penalty, only for that to be reviewed and retaken too, with the goalkeeper off his line. That one he slotted away, before goading the goalkeeper, getting shoved over and picking up a booking. Crazy stuff.

A senseless foul from Emre Can gifted Sevilla a route back into the game from the spot, and Youssef En-Nesyri rifled home the penalty.

It really was squeaky bum time as the Moroccan added a second with a bullet header from a sumptuous Ivan Rakitic cross in injury time, but BVB held on - just - to progress on aggregate.

1. Goalkeeper & defenders

Marwin Hitz (GK) - 6/10 - Didn't have much to do for most of the game, but got down well to deny Papu Gomez in the second half. Also tipped over a fierce long-range free kick from Oscar Rodriguez. Could do nothing about the penalty or header.

Mateu Morey (RB) - 6/10 - Strangely quiet game, although the visitors did pose a threat down his flank in the second half. Booked.

Emre Can (CB) - 6/10 - Was untroubled before conceding a needless penalty for a blatant shove in the second half. Nowhere to be seen as En-Nesyri sent home a late bullet header too.

Mats Hummels (CB) - 7/10 - Typically solid at the back for Dortmund. Tough night's work, but like Can he was missing as the late equaliser went in.

Nico Schulz (LB) - 7/10 - Excellent pressing in the attacking third to nick the ball back shortly before the opener. Tested in the second half with plenty of crosses coming in from his wing.

2. Midfielders

Mahmoud Dahoud (CM) - 6/10 - Lovely pass in the build-up to Haaland's opener, and again before Haaland's disallowed goal. Worked hard but started to tire in the second period.

Thomas Delaney (CM) - 7/10 - Pressed brilliantly to help win the ball in the lead-up to the opener. Patrolled the midfield well, using his experience to break up play and buy cheap fouls.

Jude Bellingham (CM) - 7/10 - Another performance beyond his tender years. Spent a lot of time without the ball but used it well when he did have it and defended staunchly.

3. Forwards

Thorgan Hazard (RF) - 7/10 - Sharp and useful at both ends of the pitch in the absence of Jadon Sancho, although probably forced to do more defending than he would have liked.

Erling Braut Haaland (ST) - 8/10 - At the centre of everything. Tapped home an inevitable goal after a quiet first half. Had a goal chalked off by VAR for a foul, was awarded a penalty, missed the penalty, retook the penalty, scored the penalty and was booked for his celebration in a crazy few minutes in the second half.

Marco Reus (LF) - 7/10 - Received a wonderful pass from Dahoud to tee up Haaland for the opener. Typically classy on the ball when he had the chance but perhaps a bit of a passenger in the second half.

4. Substitutes

Dan-Axel Zagadou (CB) - 6/10 - Some important clearances despite coming on so late.
