Borussia Dortmund 1-3 Bayern Munich: Player ratings as Die Roten lift DFL Supercup

A Robert Lewandowski brace either side of Thomas Muller's strike gave Bayern Munich a 3-1 victory over Der Klassiker rivals Borussia Dortmund in the DFL Supercup on Tuesday night.

In a feisty and evenly matched first period, it was BVB that had the ball in the back of the net first, although 16-year-old Youssoufa Moukoko's clinical finish was chalked off for offside.

Bayern then broke the deadlock four minutes before half-time, as Serge Gnabry's floated cross from the left wing was unsurprisingly met emphatically by Lewandowski, who thumped a header into Gregor Kobel's bottom corner.

It took Julian Nagelsmann's men just four minutes of the second period to double their lead. The Bavarian giants embarked on a blistering counterattack, before Alphonso Davies' deflected cross was tapped in by Muller from close range.

Dortmund had another goal written off for offside just four minutes later, as Erling Haaland broke through and coolly dispatched his chance, only for the linesman's flag to spoil his party. But Marco Rose's side did get back into the game after 64 minutes, when Marco Reus magnificently curled Jude Bellingham's lay off into Manuel Neuer's top corner from 20 yards out.

Bayern killed the game off, however, restoring a two-goal cushion in the 74th minute. Manuel Akanji was pressed hard by Corentin Tolisso, whose tackle fell to Lewandowski to calmly finish past a helpless Kobel.

That proved the final key moment of the match, as Nagelsmann won the first major trophy of his career and the first of Bayern's season. Now, let's see how the players rated...

BORUSSIA DORTMUND PLAYER RATINGS

1. Goalkeeper & defenders

Gregor Kobel (GK) - 6/10 - Very assured and confident display, often rushing out to cut out long balls over the top. Had no chance with the Bayern goals, though.

Felix Passlack (RB) - 5/10 - Struggled to contain the threat of Gnabry on Bayern's left and had some very shaky moments in possession, gifting numerous opportunities to the opposition.

Axel Witsel (CB) - 6/10 - Positioned himself well to make some valuable clearances in the box, although his presence would've been better felt in the midfield.

Manuel Akanji (CB) - 5/10 - Very aware to the danger of Bayern's lofted through balls and crosses, reading the game well to cut the danger out. Ruined a good performance in typical style, however, making a disastrous error that led to Bayern's third.

Nico Schulz (LB) - 5/10 - Sound enough in a defensive capacity although had very little impact upfield and seemed to rely on hit-and-hope balls too often.

2. Midfielders

Jude Bellingham (CM) - 7/10 - Not as emphatic a performance as we've seen but still demonstrated that unerring drive and tenacity in midfield, always battling for the ball. Drove forward well and made great use of possession in advanced areas, notably grabbing the assist for Reus' strike.

Mahmoud Dahoud (CM) - 7/10 - Tenaciously cut out space in the centre of the field to good effect and was more often than not dominant in 50/50 challenges. Showed some neat touches and good range of passing when building out from deep, too.

Gio Reyna (CM) - 6/10 - Disappointingly demonstrated little of his cute attacking prowess and seemed more concentrated on defensive duties. Fared well, stifling a few Bayern moves but was missed in the final third.

Marco Reus (AM) - 7/10 - Uncharacteristically sloppy on the ball and gave away possession too many times, but my goodness what a goal. Unbelievable finish to get his side back fighting in the match.

3. Forwards

Erling Haaland (ST) - 7/10 - Intelligent and untouchable in forward areas, showing great composure and vision when linking things up and making some superb runs in behind the high line of his opposition. Saw a good effort saved brilliantly by Neuer before half-time but just couldn't get that ball into the back of the net.

Youssoufa Moukoko (ST) - 6/10 - Gave glimpses of his blistering pace and made some lovely runs into dangerous areas. Was unlucky to have drifted just offside in the build up to his disallowed strike.

5. Goalkeeper & defenders

Manuel Neuer (GK) - 7/10 - His class just doesn't disappear. Made two crucial saves when presented with one-on-one scenarios in the first half and remained solid afterwards.

Josip Stanisic (RB) - 7/10 - Dealt with the Dortmund left impressively, seemingly unfazed by his opposition's explosive players.

Dayot Upamecano (CB) - 7/10 - A huge presence in the back line, using his monstrous physicality to protect his box. Dortmund's attack struggled when facing up against him in one-one-one situations.

Niklas Sule (CB) - 7/10 - Not troubled too much in defence, but was brilliant in possession, showing great composure to distribute and carry the ball out from the back.

Alphonso Davies (LB) - 8/10 - Maintained a high position throughout and got his reward with an assist for Bayern's second goal. Had no issues in defence, either, using his stunning speed to recover and stifle BVB attacks.

6. Midfielders

Joshua Kimmich (CM) - 6/10 - Sprayed the ball around well, but couldn't really get a hold of proceedings and wasn't as prominent in the game as we're used to.

Leon Goretzka (CM) - 6/10 - Displayed his staggering athleticism and dynamism as he bombed up and down the pitch to add a presence at both ends.

Thomas Muller (AM) - 6/10 - Floated around the pitch in order to pick out pockets of space but failed to impact proceedings with possession. Found himself at the right place at the right time in the second half, however, tapping in for 2-0.

7. Forwards

Kingsley Coman (RW) - 6/10 - Good build-up play at the business end of the pitch, demonstrating great feet and trickery to create space for himself and deliver balls into the area. Also volleyed narrowly wide in the first half, missing what would've been an emphatic strike.

Robert Lewandowski (ST) - 8/10 - Fairly anonymous in all honesty, rarely getting the service to trouble the Dortmund back line that much. But give him a chance and he'll score, which is exactly what happened - twice. Inevitable.

Serge Gnabry (LW) - 8/10 - Looked likely to make things happen in the final third as son as the first whistle blew. Gave Passlack a torrid time with his movement and clinical feet, eventually crossing perfectly for the onrushing Lewandowski to head home.
