Veteran goalkeeper Ben Foster has signed a one-year contract extension with National League champions Wrexham.

Former Manchester United, West Brom and Watford stopper Foster, who also made eight appearances for England between 2007 and 2014, came out of retirement to join the Welsh side on a short-term deal in March after first choice Rob Lainton suffered a knee ligament injury.

Foster, who played on loan for Wrexham from Stoke in 2005, helped Wrexham win promotion to League Two. The 40-year-old made a crucial contribution in a title clash with Notts County in April, saving a penalty from Cedwyn Scott in the final seconds to secure a 3-2 win at the Racecourse Ground.

He told the club's website: "At the end of last season it was obvious that I enjoyed being at the club, I loved being part of the team and everything that Wrexham stands for.

"The fans took to me so warmly, Phil Parkinson is brilliant, Steve Parkin is top class, I love Aidan Davison to bits, and the co-chairmen are out of this world.

"I'd decided before the end of last season I wanted to do it, because it feels like home. I've never joined a football club and felt at ease so quickly."

Manager Phil Parkinson added: "We're delighted that Ben has signed for the coming season.

"It's a key signing for us because we all saw the impact he had, not just on the pitch but also around the training ground, and we are all looking forward to working with him again next season."

Wrexham are due to face Chelsea, LA Galaxy II and Manchester United in pre-season friendlies in the United States next month before their return to the Football League begins in early August.
