Bayern Munich coach Julian Nagelsmann is rumoured to be keen on reuniting with RB Leipzig midfielder Marcel Sabitzer this summer, but there are yet to be any talks between the pair of Bundesliga rivals over a potential deal.

Austria international Sabitzer first joined Leipzig back in 2014 when the nouveau riche club was still in 2.Bundesliga and has more recently gone on to establish himself as one of the most highly rated goalscoring midfielders in Europe.

He played under Nagelsmann for the past two seasons, scoring a career best 16 goals in all competitions during the 2019/20 campaign as Leipzig reached the Champions League semi-finals.

But Nagelsmann has since moved on, taking over from Hansi Flick at Bayern, with German outlet SPORT1 reporting that the coach has his eye on Sabitzer.

The new boss is specifically seeking another midfielder like existing star Leon Goretzka to be a box to box player, with Sabitzer currently valued between €15m and €18m.

The issue for Bayern, however, is that finances dictate they must sell before they can buy. The Bundesliga champions have already invested more than €42m to sign Dayot Upamecano, a transfer that became official on 1 July, and are yet to recoup any transfer fees this summer despite seeing the departures of David Alaba, Jerome Boateng and Javi Martinez.

Corentin Tolisso and Michael Cuisance are players who would be available for sale to raise funds and make room, although there have not yet been any suitable offers for the pair.

In short, there is no chance of securing a ‘quick agreement’ to sign Sabitzer.

However, Bayern could yet wait in the hope that Sabitzer runs down his Leipzig contract and then make him an offer in January to sign as a free agent next summer instead.

The 27-year-old has entered the final 12 months of his current deal and will be eligible to start formally negotiating a pre-contract agreement with potential suitors as of 1 January.

Understandably, Leipzig remain keen to try and agree a new contract with Sabitzer.
