Bayern Munich 5-2 Benfica: Player ratings as Die Roten sail through to last 16

Bayern Munich secured passage to the last 16 of the Champions League on Tuesday night, seeing off Benfica 5-2 at the Allianz Arena.

A frantic beginning to the game led to opportunities at both ends, with Benfica putting the ball in the net first. Lucas Verissimo's tap in, however, was ruled out as Pizzi was to adjudged to have assisted his colleague from an offside position.

It was, eventually, the hosts that broke the deadlock in the 26th minute. Kingsley Coman twisted his full-back inside-out before teeing up Robert Lewandowski at the back stick. Six minutes later, Serge Gnabry was nonchalantly back-heeling Lewandowski's cut back to make it 2-0, after the Pole latched onto a sensational ball by Joshua Kimmich.

Benfica managed to pull one back in the 38th minute, when Morato headed in Alex Grimaldo's cross to score a Champions League goal past Manuel Neuer for the first time this campaign. Bayern could have restored their two-goal cushion before the half-time whistle, although Lewandowski's shocking effort from the spot was easily saved by Odysseas Vlachodimos.

It only took Die Roten four minutes after the resumption to get a third, though. Alphonso Davies headed down Kimmich's beautiful clipped pass into the path of Leroy Sane, before the German emphatically fired home a half-volley into the far corner.

Julian Nagelsmann's men then made it four with a thing of beauty. Kimmich set his side on the counter with a perfectly executed first-time ball through to Sane, who kept his cool to lay off Lewandowski. The striker made up for his earlier error by taking a touch to step past his defender and dink the ball over the onrushing goalkeeper.

The visitors bagged themselves a consolation with 15 minutes remaining, as Joao Mario drove forward on the counter before feeding Darwin Nunez, who slid the ball through the legs of Neuer.

You'd be a fool for thinking Bayern were done there, though. They bagged their fifth as Lewandowski brought down Manuel Neuer's incredible long-range pass from the sky, before lobbing the goalkeeper with ease to seal his hat-trick.

Benfica were put out of their misery soon after, as the referee blew up to seal a thumping victory and a place in the last 16 for Die Roten. Here's how the players rated...

1. Goalkeeper & Defenders

Manuel Neuer (GK) - 7/10 - Was given little chance with Benfica's first strike but should feel disappointed at being beaten for a second time. Made up for it with a jaw-dropping assist for Lewandowski's third, however.

Benjamin Pavard (RB) - 6/10 - You know when big, illuminated shop signs have one letter broken and unlit? That letter is Pavard for Bayern Munich at the moment. Just a bit, meh.

Dayot Upamecano (CB) - 7/10 - Should have done better in the build up to both Benfica goals but was solid otherwise, generally outmuscling his opposition and making four ball recoveries.

Tanguy Nianzou (CB) - 7/10 - Making his Champions League debut for Bayern, the 19-year-old was composed on the ball and was an imposing presence to win four aerial duels.

Alphonso Davies (LB) - 8/10 - A great performance on his 21st birthday. Made crucial defensive interventions throughout and grabbed an assist for Sane's goal. Happy birthday, Phonzie!

2. Midfielders

Joshua Kimmich (CM) - 9/10 - A monumental presence at the heart of this side. A gritty screen to his back four - making five ball recoveries - but a silky playmaker from deep. Played crucial and exquisite balls for his team-mates in the build up to his side's first, third and fourth goals. Ran the show.

Leon Goretzka (CM) - 7/10 - Always dogged in his defensive duties and constantly rushed upfield to to make an impact, proving difficult to mark in the box and winning the penalty which Lewandowski fluffed.

Serge Gnabry (AM) - 8/10 - Drifted around and helped link play from all over the pitch, although his most devastating moments came as he made late runs into the area. So difficult to pick up and made it count to make it 2-0.

3. Forwards

Kingsley Coman (RW) - 8/10 - Terrorised his opposition from the outset with blistering pace, footwork and end product. An outstanding performance capped off with the assist for his side's first.

Robert Lewandowski (ST) - 9/10 - Marked his 100th Champions League appearance with an assist and a hat-trick - a simply taken opener, a phenomenal second and a gorgeous third. Probably doesn't even recall his terrible penalty.

Leroy Sane (LW) - 8/10 - Great work rate throughout and showed fantastic movement into central spaces. Consistently demonstrated excellent spatial awareness and put it to use with a brilliant finish to make it 3-1.
