Bayern Munich 2-1 Borussia Mönchengladbach: Report, Ratings & Reaction as Die Roten Edge Closer to the Title

Bayern Munich made it 10 consecutive wins in dramatic fashion on Saturday, as they beat Borussia Mönchengladbach 2-1 at the Allianz Arena.

Borussia Mönchengladbach thought they had broken the deadlock, but Jonas Hofmann's smooth finish was ruled out by VAR, as he was deemed to have been marginally offside. Bayern were next to threaten when the ball fell perfectly to Ivan Perišić, but Yann Sommer was there to save brilliantly, stretching out to keep the Croatian out with a superb piece of goalkeeping.

Yet, minutes after Sommer's amazing save, he was at fault for Bayern's opening goal. The Mönchengladbach goalkeeper sliced his clearance right into the path of Joshua Zirkzee, who put the ball into the empty net to give Bayern the lead.

After one moment of misfortune gave Bayern the lead, another one pegged them back. Patrick Hermann sent a good low cross into the box, and Benjamin Pavard managed to divert it into his own goal while trying to clear it, as Mönchengladbach drew level in unlikely fashion.

With just four minutes to go, Bayern sealed the victory with a late winner. The ball was moved out to Pavard as he bombed down the right flank, and Leon Goretzka was there to poke it home and all but seal a 10th straight win for Hans-Dieter Flick's side.

Looking for a 10th straight win and to move within just one win of the title, Bayern Munich went out to do business once again. They did seem a bit tired from their midweek DFB Cup win over Eintracht Frankfurt, but they still found a way to break the deadlock in the first half following a goalkeeping howler from Sommer.

Bayern had been attacking well and playing impressive football, before being pegged back themselves by Pavard's unlucky own goal. FCB didn't look as ruthless and hungry as usual, though they certainly would've earned a far more straightforward win were it not for Yann Sommer's solid overall performance (bar the mistake...).

Bayern were not going to end the game without all three points, and they inevitably scored the winner with four minutes to go. Goretzka's finish gave them their 10th consecutive win, extending their unbeaten run in 2020 and taking a step closer to the Meisterschaft title.

Die Roten have been outstanding all season, and fought hard on Saturday to beat a resolute Mönchengladbach. The victory was earned and deserved, and puts them in poll position to win Meisterschaft number 30 and an eighth straight title. One more win is all it will take for Flick's side, and the Bundesliga shield is well and truly in touching distance.

Bayern wouldn't have found the late winner - or been in the position to do so - without an exemplary performance from captain Manuel Neuer. His crucial saves throughout the game kept 'Gladbach at bay all evening long, with some excellent goalkeeping throughout the game proving that he's still got it at 34.

Bayern Munich could clinch the title next Tuesday, when they travel to struggling Werder Bremen. Die Roten are back at the Allianz for one last time this season, hosting Freiburg in Bavaria on 20 June as they approach the conclusion of another outstanding season.

Borussia Mönchengladbach kick-off matchday 32 as they meet Wolfsburg, hosting Die Wölfe at the BORUSSIA-PARK next Tuesday. Die Fohlen then make the trip to the Bundesliga's bottom side, facing Paderborn on 20 June.
