Four goals in just seven first-half minutes helped Bayern Munich secure a statement 5-1 win over Bayer Leverkusen and return to the top of the Bundesliga table.

Bayern came into this one off the back of a poor defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt and were clearly in the mood to prove a point with Robert Lewandowski and Serge Gnabry both grabbing braces before the break.

It did not take long for the visitors to assert their dominance with Lewandowski opening the scoring inside three minutes. Joshua Kimmich floated a free kick to the back post and Dayot Upamecano diverted it across goal for the Pole to flick home tremendously.

Bayern were in total charge in the opening exchanges with Leroy Sane, Alphonso Davies and Leon Goretzka all going close before the half-hour mark. Eventually they did double their lead when Lewandowski finished off a breathless counter attack.

Soon after it was 3-0, with Thomas Muller diverting Niklas Sule's scrappy effort past Lukas Hradecky. Seconds later, Die Roten grabbed a fourth when Serge Gnabry raced in front of Hradecky to turn in Muller's cross almost straight from the kick off.

Before half time, good work on the edge of the box allowed Gnabry to sweep home and make it 5-0 - yes 5-0.

After the break, Leverkusen managed to restore some pride with Patrik Schick finishing off Florian Wirtz's through ball emphatically. This did not spark a comeback though, with Bayern seeing out the rest of the game without too much incident.

Here are your Bayern ratings from their massive win...

1. Goalkeeper & defenders

Manuel Neuer (GK) - 6/10 - Made a couple of solid stops. Schick's finish gave him no chance.

Lucas Hernandez (RB) - 7/10 - Kept the various forwards Leverkusen sent at him quiet without too much trouble.

Dayot Upamecano (CB) - 8/10 - Very comfortable. Barely misplaced a pass all afternoon.

Niklas Sule (CB) - 8/10 - Has been impressing at full-back recently but did well in a central role here. Reads the game so well and created Muller's goal.

Alphonso Davies (LB) - 8/10 - Never stopped bombing forward. He plays such an important role in Nagelsmann's system and made a string of excellent covering runs. Taken off after 40 minutes with the game already won.

2. Midfielders

Joshua Kimmich (CM) - 9/10 - This guy is so good. Created chances, broke up play and pressed like a maniac. The best defensive midfielder in the world - and it's not even close.

Leon Goretzka (CM) - 8/10 - Will be disappointed not to score, as he spurned a good chance before the break. Full of energy which helped Bayern strangle Leverkusen.

Thomas Muller (AM) - 9/10 - Got his goal and created a comical amount of chances for the forwards in front of him. Still so good.

3. Forwards

Serge Gnabry (RW) - 9/10 - So ridiculously clinical. Rarely wastes a touch on the ball. Beautiful brace.

Robert Lewandowski (ST) - 9/10 - Two sublime finishes. His ability to put the ball in the onion bag is scary.

Leroy Sane (LW) - 8/10 - Provided a timely reminder of why Bayern pursued him for over a year. Explosive and deceptive in equal measure.

4. Substitutes

Josip Stanisic - 7/10 - Defended so well. There were questions about Bayern's depth at the beginning of the season, but he coped well - even if he's nowhere near Davies' level.

Marcel Sabitzer - 6/10 - Gave a solid account of himself.

Jamal Musiala - 6/10 - His introduction injected some life into a dying game.

Kingsley Coman - 6/10 - Looked bright.

Omar Richards - 6/10 - Good to see him get some minutes.
