Lyon forward Memphis Depay has confirmed that Barcelona have ongoing interest in securing his services on a free transfer this summer, although he insists that he also has other options and is yet to make a decision about which club he wants to play for next season.

Memphis is nearing the end of his Lyon contract and will leave the French club on a free transfer next month when that deal expires. The 27-year-old has enjoyed a strong season after recovering from an ACL injury that wrecked his 2019/20 campaign and offers extreme values as a free agent.

With one game of the French season remaining, Memphis has scored 21 goals in all competitions, including 19 in Ligue 1, making it only the third time in his career has he reached 20 in a season.

Barcelona have long been linked with the former Manchester United and PSV Eindhoven player, which would mean reuniting with ex-Netherlands national team boss Ronald Koeman.

With Barça letting Luis Suarez leave Camp Nou last summer, Koeman was thought to have been on signing Memphis then, only for the club’s troubling financial position to mean that funds were unavailable – the same problem prevented Eric Garcia joining from Manchester City.

Memphis has told L’Equipe there is still interest from Camp Nou, but it is not the only option and he still has a choice to make.

“It is true that Barcelona are interested in signing me,” he told the French publication.

“But there are also other clubs in the race. I’ve not decided my future at the moment. I need some time then I’ll choose my next club.”

Barcelona are already thought to be at an advanced stage of the process to sign Manchester City legend Sergio Aguero on a free transfer when his contract expires this summer.

Aguero is expected to sign a two-year deal at Camp Nou on a reduced salary, while there is hope among club officials that his arrival could prompt Lionel Messi to sign a fresh contract.
