Barcelona had the chance to sign Fiorentina striker Dusan Vlahovic for just £15m in 2020 but rejected the offer.
Now 21, Vlahovic is among the most in-demand players around. Arsenal are currently desperate to land him in a £60m deal this month, while the likes of Tottenham, Manchester City, Chelsea, Juventus and even Barcelona are readying moves in the summer.
It's going to be an almighty transfer scramble, and according to Marca, it's one which Barcelona could have avoided if they had just pulled the trigger two years ago.
In August 2020, Fiorentina were open to parting ways with Vlahovic. The youngster, who was still fairly highly rated at the time, had just bagged six goals in 30 Serie A appearances and his agent spoke to Barcelona about a deal.
Fiorentina were ready to offload Vlahovic on a season-long loan with a mandatory purchase option of £15m, but Barcelona, who were represented by Eric Abidal in the negotiations, feared that his poor form towards the end of the 2019/20 season made him too much of a risk.
They did not want to agree to the mandatory purchase option as they were not fully convinced by Vlahovic and instead sent his agent back to Fiorentina to tell them the deal was off.
In the 12 months that followed, Vlahovic netted 21 goals in 37 Serie A games and he has followed that up with 16 in 20 so far this year, with many comparing the 21-year-old to Borussia Dortmund hitman Erling Haaland.
That form has seen Fiorentina raise their asking price for Vlahovic, who is now valued at closer to £60m and would be significantly more valuable were it not for his expiring contract, which has just 18 months to run.
Vlahovic has rejected an extension and 90min understands that he is keen to leave in the summer, when he will undoubtedly receive countless offers from some of the game's biggest clubs, one of which could be Barcelona.
Barcelona are hopeful of signing Haaland, who would cost a similar fee before commission and wages come into it, but Vlahovic is now seen as a viable alternative.
