Robert Lewandowski has given Barcelona hope that he could return in time to face Real Madrid this month after revealing his ankle injury is not as bad as first feared.

The Polish striker was hauled off during the first half of Barca's 1-0 win at Porto in the Champions League last week following a strong challenge from David Carmo. He then sat out their 2-2 draw at Granada a few days later.

Lewandowski was further ruled out of Poland's October internationals and there were fears in Catalonia that he could miss the first Clasico of the season on October 28 when Real Madrid visit the Estadio Olimpico Lluis Companys.

But speaking on WP Sportowe Fakty back in Poland, Lewandowski insisted he could be fit to face Real Madrid, though has not put a timetable on his comeback.

"From Wednesday to Friday I rested. I have been working and rehabilitating since Friday. I take care of my leg, seven-to-ten days. This is the most important time for the ankle to rest," he said.

"More will be said next week, but it [the injury] looks better than many people thought. There is no return date. It all depends on how the leg reacts. If I'm not fit, I won't force myself to play."

Barcelona went into the October international break as the last remaining unbeaten team in La Liga, though they sit third in the standings.

Xavi's men have accrued 21 points from their opening nine games, sitting behind Catalan neighbours Girona (22) and rivals Real Madrid (24) in the table.

Before welcoming Real Madrid to Montjuic, they will host Athletic Club in La Liga and Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League.
