Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen is set to undergo knee surgery which will keep him out of this summer's European Championships.

Ter Stegen was in goal for Sunday's surprise 2-1 defeat to Celta Vigo, which confirmed that Barcelona can no longer win the La Liga title.

With nothing left to play for this season, Ter Stegen has confirmed on Instagram that he is set to undergo knee surgery to address a minor issue which will force him to miss out on a spot in Germany's squad for this summer's Euros.

"I have decided together with the medical team of the club that I will do a complementary intervention on my knee," he wrote. "I’m sad that I will miss the EURO 2020 this summer with Germany.

"For the first time in many years I will be a fan at home supporting my country, I hope we win it!
After the summer break, when we are back on the pitch I hope to be able to play with fans once again, I miss it!

"Thank you for your support throughout a difficult season and stay healthy!"

For Barcelona, it means backup goalkeeper Neto will complete the season, but Ter Stegen's decision won't actually have too much of an impact for Germany boss Joachim Low, who has always preferred Bayern Munich's Manuel Neuer in between the sticks.

Ter Stegen has earned just 24 caps since making his debut in 2012, most of which came during the 2017/18 season when Neuer was missing with a troublesome foot injury.

His chances of ousting Neuer this summer were already slim, given his underwhelming form at club level recently, but now he is set to watch on from home this summer as Low's men try and win the trophy for the first time since 1996.

Fortunately for Low, it's not as if he has been left with no options in goal. Neuer will likely be backed up by Arsenal's Bernd Leno and Frankfurt's Kevin Trapp, but there could also be call-ups for the likes of Freiburg's Florian Muller or Bayern backup Alexander Nubel.
