Barcelona are thought to have held ‘initial talks’ with representatives of Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero, who will be available on a free transfer at the end of next month.
Aguero is bringing down the curtain on a 10-year spell with City that could yet end with Champions League glory – this month’s final against Chelsea will be his last ever game with the club – after it was confirmed earlier this season that he wouldn’t be signing a new contract.
The 32-year-old, who is the Premier League’s all-time leading foreign goalscorer, is already free to negotiate his next move with overseas clubs. As such, Sky Sports reports that Barcelona have kicked off early talks to potentially boost their attacking ranks after failing to replace Luis Suarez.
Aguero will be 33 by the time he can join his next club but it has been suggested that there is ‘no catch’ for Barcelona, given that the player already speaks the language and is a close friend of Lionel Messi. It is even said that landing Aguero could be a way for Barca to convince Messi to stay.
Despite his decade-long commitment to City, Aguero has also been linked with a move elsewhere in the Premier League. Chelsea were dubbed early favourites as an affordable short-term option should they fail in their efforts to sign the heavily coveted Erling Haaland. Tottenham are also linked.
Although Manchester United would be off the table, it has been said that Aguero feels he could still perform in the Premier League and is keen to score more goals in the competition. Alan Shearer’s all-time goal record is probably just out of reach, but he could move into second place on the all-time list, ahead of Wayne Rooney and Andrew Cole, with just 27 more goals.
Aguero scored his 182nd Premier League goal in his last weekend’s win over Crystal Palace.
