Liverpool and Chelsea have been told that they have lost out to Real Madrid in the race to sign Aurelien Tchouameni, 90min understands.

Monaco have allowed Tchouameni to make the decision on his next club, with Real Madrid, Liverpool, Chelsea and Paris Saint Germain all holding talks with the player.

Terms were agreed between the player and interested parties, and while Monaco have not yet confirmed agreement with any club, sources have confirmed to 90min that Tchouameni has decided to join Real.

90min revealed on Monday that both Liverpool and Chelsea were fearful that the player was going to head to Madrid, and that has now come to pass.

Chelsea have had a long-term interest in Tchouameni dating back over a year, but their decision not to do a deal last summer is something that they may live to regret. Even up until this summer, the Blues were keen - but the interest of both Real Madrid and Liverpool, which 90min revealed last month, was something that was always going to be difficult for them to overcome.

Listen now to 90min's brand new podcast, Talking Transfers, with Scott Saunders, Graeme Bailey & Toby Cudworth. This week they discuss West Ham's Declan Rice contract plans, Gabriel Jesus' Manchester City future and how Aston Villa still want Yves Bissouma despite adding Boubacar Kamara to their ranks. There's also chat on Kylian Mbappe's decision to stay at PSG, Aurielen Tchouameni & Mohamed Salah.

Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool, who can seal a famous treble with victory over Real in the Champions League final on Saturday, had made Tchouameni one of their top summer targets after being hugely impressed with his progress this season - progress that has seen him become a key player in Didier Deschamps' France national team.

The Reds even believed they were closing on an agreement a couple of weeks ago, with one source telling 90min of the belief that a deal was '90% done'. However, a final push from Real Madrid has won the day.

The news will be a big boost to the reigning La Liga champions, who missed out on the signing of Kylian Mbappe this week. He opted to sign a new deal at Paris Saint-Germain, while Brazilian teenager Endrick, who can't move to Europe for another two years, has decided to pen a professional contract with Palmeiras.
