Augsburg 2-1 Bayern Munich: Player ratings as champions slump to derby defeat

Covid-enforced absences took their toll on Bayern Munich on Friday night as Julian Nagelsmann's side slumped to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of local rivals Augsburg.

Augsburg, who were without key players of their own, came out aggressively and did their best to prove they weren't scared of Bayern, pressing high and moving the ball forward with real intent. The visitors eventually got control of the ball, but Augsburg continued to threaten on the counter.

That threat turned into a deserved lead in the 23rd minute when Mads Pedersen found himself alone in the box to thunder home past Manuel Neuer.

Bayern always looked intimidating - they are Bayern, after all - but Augsburg defended incredibly well and bagged a second ten minutes later through Andre Hahn, whose deft header somehow found a way through Neuer and into the back of the net.

In need of a goal, up popped Robert Lewandowski, who pulled one back minutes later with a well-taken volley - his 22nd career goal against Augsburg - to half the deficit heading into the break.

The second half began in similar fashion. Bayern enjoyed the vast majority of the possession but just didn't have enough about them to break Augsburg down. Substitute Alphonso Davies had some half-chances, but that was about as good as it got for Bayern for the majority of the second 45.

It took them until the 80th minute to create anything of note. The ball dropped right at the feet of Lewandowski, whose snap shot was well kept out by Rafal Gikiewicz.

Ultimately, Bayern weren't good enough to break down a well-drilled Augsburg side, who were left celebrating just their fourth-ever victory over their noisy neighbours.

1. Goalkeeper & defenders

Manuel Neuer (GK) - 5/10 - Helpless with the first goal but probably should have done better with the second.

Benjamin Pavard (RB) - 2/10 - Bayern were absolutely battered down their right and Pavard could do nothing about it. Looked so uncertain about everything.

Dayot Upamecano (CB) - 4/10 - Very sluggish. Struggled to cope with Augsburg's energy.

Lucas Hernandez (CB) - 5/10 - A few too many shaky mistakes at the back. Should be doing better.

Omar Richards (LB) - 5/10 - Played with real energy and got himself involved at both ends of the field, although didn't always manage to pull off what he wanted. Can't fault the effort.

2. Midfielders

Marcel Sabitzer (CM) - 2/10 - Just when you thought Bayern couldn't miss Joshua Kimmich any more, Sabitzer goes and does this. Absolutely mauled at the base of the midfield. Played some decent passes but not enough to cover himself. Hooked shortly after half time.

Leon Goretzka (CM) - 4/10 - Looked clunky alongside Sabitzer, whose skill set mirrors his too precisely. Couldn't get into the game and didn't get much better when he was on his own.

Serge Gnabry (RM) - 4/10 - Involved in a lot without actually doing a lot.

Thomas Muller (AM) - 5/10 - Some nice movement and a clever flick for Lewandowski's goal, but hardly an ideal way to celebrate your 600th Bayern game.

Leroy Sane (LM) - 4/10 - A weird one. Completed a lot of dribbles and yet it still felt like he did nothing. Some stinking corners.

3. Forward

Robert Lewandowski (ST) - 4/10 - Took his goal well but was otherwise pretty isolated throughout. Felt like he barely even touched the ball.

4. Substitutes

Jamal Musiala (AM) - 5/10 - Got himself involved in a lot but, like everyone else, just couldn't find a way through.

Alphonso Davies (LB) - 6/10 - Easily Bayern's most threatening player. Got himself forwards a lot and looked more likely than anyone to get a goal.

Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting (LM) - 5/10 - Didn't do a lot after coming on.
